Narvasa twits Cone, says format good for the league

Looks like Grandslam coach Tim Cone would need to learn how to embrace a format he hates. Commissioner Chito Narvasa yesterday said he sees nothing wrong with the format which actually has been implemented even before he came on board. Days after Ginebra was ousted by Globalport in Phase 2 of the quarterfinal round last week, Cone revealed to Spin.ph his dislike about the current format where a one game, knockout encounter awaits the four surviving squads after the eight-team, first phase quarterfinal playoffs of the ongoing PBA Philippine Cup. “Mostly, I just wish we didn’t have single knockout games in the playoffs. That kind of format doesn’t reward the best team – just the team who had the better shooting night, or the better referee’s call, or the luckier shot down the …

Lawler beats Condit in brawl, retains UFC welterweight title

Las Vegas — Robbie Lawler defended his UFC welterweight belt with a bruising split-decision victory over Carlos Condit at UFC 195 on Saturday night. Lawler (27-10) was awarded the narrow decision after an outstanding five-round brawl at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. Condit (30-9) landed 120 more strikes and wobbled the champion multiple times, but Lawler's power did enough damage to win three rounds on two judges’ scorecards. Lawler and Condit established a lofty benchmark for the best fight of 2016 with their thrilling, draining slugfest. Both fighters landed huge strikes and big knockdowns, yet both bounced up and kept fighting into a brutal fifth round in which they struggled to lift their arms for punches or defense. At the final bell, the fighters stood side-by-side with their arms on the cage in …

Lawler defends title vs Condit

By Dennis Principe United States Senator John McCain once labeled Mixed Martial Arts as a brutal exhibition of machismo with no place in the modern world. Today, title contender Carlos “Natural Born Killer” Condit plans to add a little bit of finesse in his style to help enhance the image of his sport and at the same time improve his chances in his battle against defending UFC Welterweight champion Robbie “Ruthless” Lawler. “For me, this is a creative outlet, like putting together great notes. We put together great techniques, we develop different combinations to solve different problems,” said Condit. Condit and Lawler will headline UFC 195 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, site of countless immortal events in boxing which, like MMA, has been widely condemned by activists. While their nicknames seemed …

Two-time world champion Rubilen Amit hopes the month-long respite will rejuvenate her as she goes back to training this week. Top 10 Stories of 2015

(Second of two parts) No. 6 – COLLEGE CHAMPIONS When the NCAA season began, Letran was not even a blimp on the radar. The pundits were talking mostly about San Beda’s six-peat quest. But when the so-called smoke of battle cleared, it was the Knights who were on top of the world, beating San Beda in a deciding third game that many say will go down as one of the most thrilling NCAA finals ever. Powered by small but terrible Mark Cruz and gutsy forward Kevin Racal and shooter Rey Nambatac, the Knights tamed the Red Lions, 85-82, in overtime to clinch their first title in 10 years. Letran’s celebration, however, was short lived. True, it won the title, but the school lost its coach Aldin Ayo, who many credited as the man chiefly responsible …
