Frenchman Thomas Lebas returns for another shot at glory as he defends his title in the 2016 Le Tour de Filipinas which starts on Feb. 18 in Antipolo City. Lebas, who won last year’s four-stage race from Balanga to Baguio by dethroning Filipino Mark Galedo, is among the favorites to win this year’s edition that will head to the Quezon province and Bicol region for the first time in the history of the cycling competition presented by Air21. The Bridgestone Anchor Cycling Team rider, however, will be facing stiff competition from 74 other cyclists from three Filipino teams and 12 foreign squads. PH volley out to improve Asian presence

The Larong Volleyball ng Pilipinas Incorporated (LVPI) will try to make an impact in the international scene by setting a strong program of development in the next two years. On tap for the association is forming an Under-19 squad early to prepare for the 18th Asian Women’s Championship in Nakhon Ratchassima, Thailand in July. Apart from forming the team, Romasanta said the association is also looking for a coach to handle the team full time. The coach will also prepare the team for the 2017 Southeast Asian Games in Kuala Lumpur as well as the 2019 SEAG in Manila. “I have observed that there are a lot of coaches that can be full-time in the job, which we really need,” said Romasanta. Boxers to train in Cuba

In a rarity, the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) and Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) yesterday lauded the move of the Association of Boxing Alliances of the Philippines (ABAP) to train in Cuba as it revs up for the remaining Olympic qualifiers for Rio2016. “That’s a nice move on their part,” said POC president Jose ‘Peping’ Cojuangco, noting that the ABAP can greatly benefit from the Cubans, the world’s premier power in the sport. PSC Chairman Richie Garcia also echoed Cojuangco’s observations, saying the agency will finance the trip and board and lodging in Havana of the boxers and coaches. “It makes sense,” said Garcia. “We are willing to support but we should know the number of athletes and officials,” added Garcia, implying that the PSC won’t agree to fund a bloated delegation. Pabustan guns for WBO title

Jetro Pabustan will become the first Filipino fighter to vie for a world title this year as he challenges Pungluang Sor Singyu for the World Boxing Organization (WBO) bantamweight title on Feb. 12 in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand. Just before the end of 2015, two Filipinos attempted to win world titles but super-fly Warlito Parrenas and minimumweight Vic Saludar went home empty-handed after bowing to topnotch Japanese rivals. Pabustan (26-2-6 with seven KOs), 26, is the heavy underdog as he will be fighting for the first time on hostile ground. Sor Singyu (51-3 with 35 KOs), 27, is a veteran campaigner who is best remembered as the conqueror of AJ Banal a few years ago. Pabustan was born in Cagayan de Oro City but now resides in Malapatan, Sarangani.
