Romero pushes for sports body to develop grassroots

Party-list Rep. Mikee Romero of 1Pacman is a man in a hurry. Romero is considering the creation of a national coordinating council that can immediately put in motion the country’s grassroots development program since the proposal to establish a Department of Sports is still in the pipeline. “Since we are still waiting, we have to form a national coordinating council first to address the grassroots development problems in the country,” said Romero, noting that preparations for the next Olympics in Tokyo four years from now should begin. “The Philippine Sports Commission and the Department of Education are not well coordinated when it comes to grassroots program we have to establish the NCC,” said Romero. A bill has been filed by Romero in Congress and Romero feels that House Bill No. 287 will address various …

House committee calls for term limits for POC officials

Not funding, but overstaying sports officials are what has been keeping Philippine sports a cellar dweller among Asian countries in international sports competitions. This was the assessment of Manila Rep. Manny Lopez who yesterday made a call for the setting of term limits for officials of the Philippine Olympic Committee some of whom have been staying in their posts for decades. He said term limits would enable new blood to come into the picture and infuse new and bold ideas to change the antiquated programs that have setback Philippine sports. Lopez made his opinion in the presence of POC President Jose Cojuangco Jr. who has been criticized severely for failing to improve the country’s standing in international sports campaign in his 15 years at the helm of the POC. Cojuangco, together with some of …

Global nears UFL crown

Arthur Kouassi scored twice as Global moved a point shy of securing a rare double after blanking Stallion, 3-0, last Sunday in the United Football League at the Rizal Memorial Stadium. Kouassi, who hails from Ivory Coast, netted his two goals in the first half before Omir Nazari added a third shortly before the final whistle to help Global bounce back from its shock 2-0 loss to JP Voltes at midweek. Global improved to 44 points on 14 wins, two draws and one defeat, extending its lead over defending champion Ceres-La Salle, which has a game at hand, and JP Voltes to six and seven off the Loyola Meralco Sparks. The yellow and blue-colored side needs only a draw to secure the league title. Global has two chances to do so, either this …

Schrock leads Ceres past Loyola

Ceres-La Salle leaned on Stephan Schrock’s hat trick to beat the Loyola Meralco Sparks, 4-1, and keep its slim hopes of retaining the title last Saturday in the United Football League at the Rizal Memorial Stadium. Schrock scored the game’s first two goals before adding a third seven minutes before the second-half stoppage time to give the Busmen the maximum three points while pulling within six behind Global in the race for the league title. The Bacolod-based side needs to win its remaining three matches coupled with a massive Global meltdown to retain supremacy in the league. Global, which was coming off a stunning 2-0 defeat to JP Voltes at midweek, was playing Stallion at presstime, needing two victories to complete a UFL double. Should Global, also the winner of the UFL Cup last …

Voltes shocks Global in UFL

The surprising JP Voltes made the United Football League title race interesting after dealing league leader Global its first loss with a 2-0 victory last Wednesday at the Rizal Memorial Stadium. Yanagawa struck the opener in the 37th before Odawara sealed the deal during the second half injury time, giving Voltes its 11th win in 17 matches for 35 points. Voltes moved into second place, six points behind Global which has a game at hand.

Despite diminished clout, POC embraces PSC initiatives

The Philippine Olympic Committee is embracing the plan of the Philippine Sports Commission to take an active hand in the training, disciplining and monitoring of national athletes even if these moves leave the POC a bystander in sports development. POC President Jose Cojuangco Jr. said he welcomes the PSC’s intervention and believes this will ultimately lead to winning the country’s first Olympic gold medal in Tokyo in 2020. “It looks like I will be able to finally realize what I have been dreaming and working for the past several years,” said Cojuangco yesterday at the Philsports Arena in Pasig. By accepting PSC’s lead, Cojuangco has practically admitted that the POC has run out of ideas to turn Philippine sports around under his leadership during which he oversaw six Southeast Asian Games, three Asian …

LOS ANGELES  — Los Angeles' Yasiel Puig hit a three-run homer in a five-run first inning that set the Dodgers up for a 9-3 win against San Francisco on Wednesday, widening the gap between the National League West division's top teams to six games with only ten to play in the regular season. Washington also moved to the brink of clinching a division as it beat Miami to go nine games clear atop the NL East. Boston too tightened its grip on a playoff berth by beating Baltimore to open a five-game gap at the top of the American League East, while Cleveland edged Kansas City and also seems bound for the postseason. Puig's three-run shot was among 12 hits for the Dodgers, who took two of the three games in the series …

Barcelona star Lionel Messi will be sidelined for the next three weeks due to a groin strain, dealing a huge blow to his club and country. "To lose Lionel Messi means football loses and we lose," said Barca boss Luis Enrique. Messi limped off just before the hour mark of the Spanish champions' 1-1 draw with Atletico Madrid on Wednesday. POC sees PSC as partner, not rival, in helping sports

The Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) is willing to work closely with the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) in its plan to play an active role in the affairs of the national sports associations, two leading POC officials said yesterday. POC First Vice President Joey Romasanta and POC Chairman Tom Carrasco expressed support to PSC Chairman William “Butch” Ramirez’s hands-on approach in monitoring the training and recruitment of athletes bound for international competitions. “We share the same vision and chairman Butch Ramirez is right when he said the PSC has visitorial powers,” said Romasanta, noting that since the PSC is financing the NSAs’ overseas trips and training, it has right to dip its fingers in their affairs. While the POC is not contesting the PSC, Romasanta maintains that it would be better for the two …
