Cyna wavers but takes 2-shot lead at N’woods

San Rafael, Bulacan — Cyna Rodriguez missed posting a huge opening round lead with a double-bogey finish, settling for a two-under 70 and a two-stroke lead over Fil-Am Cristina Corpus and Thai Jaruporn Palakawongnaayuttaya in the ICTSI Royal Northwoods Ladies Challenge at the Royal Northwoods Golf Club here yesterday. On her way to an explosive start with four birdies after 17 holes, Rodriguez hit an errant shot on the par-4 closing hole and failed to recover, ending up with a double-bogey 6 that marred an otherwise solid 35-35 start. That gave her rivals some lift to keep it close with Corpus, seeking a follow-up to her breakthrough win at Luisita last year, mixing two birdies with the same number of bogeys for a 37-35 and Palakawongnaayuttaya turning in a roller-coaster round of …

Steele ends drought with birdie barrage

Napa, Calififornia – Right when Brendan Steele thought he might have a chance to win at Silverado, all he could think about was how he lost. A year ago, Steele had a 54-hole lead in the PGA Tour's season opener when he made a sloppy bogey on the 12th hole, shot 40 on the back nine and threw it away. He was two shots behind on Sunday in the Safeway Open with little room for error when he three-putted No. 12 for bogey and figured he was done. “I thought that was it for me,” Steele said. “I thought I would have to do something special. Last year, I tried not to make mistakes.” This time, he made birdies. Steele overcame a four-shot deficit in the final round, closed with three straight birdies on …

Tiger comeback becomes Tiger tease

By Doug Ferguson (AP Golf Writer) Napa, Calif. – The Tiger comeback has become the Tiger tease. And not just for golf fans. It can't be easy for Tiger Woods to feel healthy enough to play, only for the little voices in his head telling him to wait. For all the speculation about what's going on with Woods, only he knows why his game would be good enough to commit to the Safeway Open one day, and why three days later it was not. That wouldn't seem to leave much time for what he said was “a lot of soul searching and honest reflection” before deciding to withdraw. Woods said on Sept. 7 that he hoped to play this week in the Safeway Open at Silverado, along with the Turkish Airlines Open in early November …

Tiger not yet ready, postpones comeback

Los Angeles — Tiger Woods rocked the golf world Monday after abruptly cancelling his long-awaited comeback, raising fresh questions about his ability to return to the highest levels of the sport he once ruled. Just three days after the PGA Tour issued a statement trumpeting the former world number one's participation at the Safeway Open in California this week, Woods announced he was not ready to return from his 14-month injury layoff. The 14-time major winner, 40, who has been out of action since undergoing surgery late last year to cure a long-standing back injury, said concerns over form – rather than fitness – were behind the decision to delay his comeback. ''After a lot of soul-searching and honest reflection, I know that I am not yet ready to play on the PGA …
