Helterbrand, Alapag mulling retirement

One of the questions that left unanswered after the epic Game 6 of the PBA Governors’ Cup finals was whether the loyal fans had witnessed the final games of Jayjay Helterbrand and Jimmy Alapag. Even before the title series won by Barangay Ginebra San Miguel began, the PBA’s best guards during the first decade of the 21st century had been contemplating on ending their decorated playing careers. Helterbrand has been in the league since 2000, having won the Most Valuable Player nine years later and teamed up with Mark Caguioa to give Ginebra five championships, including the Governors’ Cup title conquest. Alapag, on the other hand, had decided to hang it up for good last year after six championships and a 2011 MVP award for Talk ‘N Text, before taking a U-turn to …

Philadelphia 76ers forward Elton Brand retired Thursday, calling it quits at age 37 after 17 NBA seasons since being the first overall selection in the 1999 NBA Draft. Meralco rues costly mistake

The other perspective of Justin Brownlee’s shot heard around the nation was the costly mistake made by the Meralco Bolts. “We should have fouled on that last play,” reflected Meralco coach Norman Black. “That was the instruction and we did not, cost us the game.” But Black offered little reason to sour grape on the miscue that allowed Barangay Ginebra San Miguel to end eight years of frustration on Brownlee’s buzzer-beating three that sealed a 91-88 victory in the title-clinching Game 6 of the PBA Governors’ Cup finals. “I thanked the players for their effort this year,” he said. “This was unexpected for most people that we would be in this position right now, and I was very proud of what the players have done in this tournament.” Unexpected may have been the perfect …

We’ll build a dynasty, vows Cone

Not one, not two, not three, not four. For Coach Tim Cone, Barangay Ginebra San Miguel is capable of starting a dynasty. In a magical run to the championship, the Kings made a triumphant return to the PBA throne following a 91-88 victory in Game 6 of a thrilling finals showdown against the Meralco Bolts to capture the 2016 Governors’ Cup crown last Wednesday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. “In our minds, this is just our first championship,” said Cone following the team’s nail-biting win against Meralco before more than 23,000 fans. “This is not the only championship that we’re gonna get. We’re gonna go out and get another one. We want to win many. That’s our challenge,” he said. Really brave words for a coach whose team had been winless for eight years, but …

Birth of 3rd child pushed LA Tenorio to give it all

It took four years for LA Tenorio to finally capture a PBA title with Barangay Ginebra San Miguel. Not that it’s out of the way, the Most Valuable Player of the Governors’ Cup finals hopes to win more championships for his team. The 5-foot-10 guard played the series-clinching Game 6 like it was a do-or-die encounter as he scored 25 points, including 14 during Ginebra’s fightback from a double-digit deficit in the third quarter to seal a 91-88 victory over the Meralco Bolts Wednesday night at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. “Sana hindi ito yung huli,” said Tenorio, who joined Ginebra in 2012 after being traded from Alaska. “Medyo matagal din nag-antay for this one, kaya sana hindi naman ganun katagal uli… next season uli.” Tenorio finally gave the Kings a title after his …

Rapid Replay feature targets NBA global audience

The National Basketball Association's international fans will be able to watch highlights in near real-time as part of changes to the league's subscription service being rolled out for the new season, officials said Thursday. The new feature known as NBA Rapid Replay will be available through various packages tailored to meet the demands of fans throughout the globe, building on the success of highlight clips previously shown on Twitter. "It's one thing to tell our fans that a game is getting close going into the fourth quarter, or that Steph Curry hit a half-court shot at the end of the third tying it up, but it's another thing for us to use pretty near live video in order to show fans what is happening," Melissa Brenner, the NBA's senior vice president of …

PBA scribes honor Paul Lee

Ace guard Paul Lee will be this year's recipient of the "Bogs Adornado" Comeback Player of the Year, while the six awardees will be feted with the revival of the All-Interview Team during the 2016 PBA Press Corps Annual Awards Night on Saturday at the Gloria Maris restaurant inside the Gateway Mall. Lee won the award for his courageous performance with Rain of Shine despite dealing with a left knee injury that sidelined him in some part of the season. The affair, presented by CIGNAL, is set at 7 p.m. The 6-foot-1 Lee, recently shipped to Star in a blockbuster trade for James Yap, missed the entire Philippine Cup elimination round with ITB tear that required a PRP injection. He rejoined ROS in the semifinals but reinjured the knee as the Elasto …

Uichico out, Racela in as Texters coach

Losing to Meralco in the semifinals of the Governors’ Cup may have cost Jong Uichico his job as coach of the TNT Katropa. Well-placed sources said TNT will be handled next season by current Far Eastern University coach Nash Racela, Uichico’s assistant at TNT. Uichico, a veteran coach with 10 PBA championships under his belt with various teams, said yesterday he was not aware that he has been fired. He was in the middle of a practice session with the TNT Katropa at the Moro Lorenzo gym at the Ateneo campus in Quezon City when he heard the news. "I just saw it in the news. I haven't heard anything from management," he said when contacted yesterday. No one from TNT, however, has confirmed the coaching change which came as a surprise since Uichico …

Ginebra set for Meralco fight back

Game Today (Smart Araneta Coliseum) 7 p.m. – Ginebra vs Meralco (Game 6) Game 1: Meralco 114, Ginebra, 109 Game 2: Ginebra 82, Meralco 79 Game 3: Meralco 107, Ginebra 103 Game 4: Ginebra 88, Meralco 86 Game 5: Ginebra 92, Meralco 81 Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Coach Tim Cone has this idea that winning a Game 6 to win a championship is more difficult than winning a Game 7. Why he thinks so is a bit of mystery although it’s probably his way of motivating his players who might be too confident and play haphazardly knowing that even if they lose, there’s a Game 7 to look forward to. “Without a doubt, closing out the series is the hardest thing to do,” said Cone who goes for the PBA Governors’ Cup championship today against Meralco. Ginebra leads the series, …
