Audi unveils the all new A4, A7, and Q3

The all-new Audi A4 is now available in the Philippines. Exclusive distributor, PGA Cars, Inc., took the wraps off the premium executive sedan from Ingolstadt last Sept. 19. Audi noted the vehicle is more powerful, more efficient, and more intelligent thanks to numerous technologies that set the bar higher for its segment. The new vehicle features the signature Singleframe grille new LED headlights with built-in daytime running lights (DRLs) and new LED tail-lights with more distinctive signal lamps. In spite of the new eyes, the vehicle still retains its sleek and elegant design. Powering the A4 is a 2.0-liter, inline-four turbocharged diesel engine that delivers 150 hp and 320 Nm of torque. It is paired to seven-speed, S tronic dual-clutch transmission. This allows the front-wheel drive A4 2.0 TDI S tronic to …

Simple design, advanced engineering

This country needs to fall in love with hatchbacks more. There I said it. Despite its size, it takes care of that one problem — space. Just to give you an idea of how much cargo room you get, a hatchback variant will have an extra 6-7 cubic feet of space, depending on the brand, compared to its sedan sibling. Currently, only subcompact hatchbacks enjoy a certain amount of popularity. Compact hatchbacks are still under the radar since majority of buyers prefer a regular trunk to a hatchback. I take the Golf 1.4 TSI DSG Highline for a spin to show you how hatchbacks can be the better alternative than the average sedan.   Simple design The Golf, of all the hatchbacks available, has probably the most plain design. It is absolutely unassuming and totally straightforward …

Toyota unveils the refreshed 86

While I have yet to meet a person who looks at an 86 and goes, “that’s really not for me,” Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) has gone ahead and given it a facelift before anyone actually noticed that it was already four years old. At an event coinciding with the pre-race party for the third leg of the Vios Cup Season 3, TMP unveiled, in spectacular fashion, the ‘refreshed’ 86 at the Clark International Speedway. Rolling in slowly under party lights and dance music, the new 86 — driven by professional drifter Alex Perez — went into a series of drift moves in confines barely the size of a basketball court. As if that wasn’t impressive enough to showcase its superb handling, the female host of the event walks right up to the middle …

A worthy contender

When it comes to sub-compact cars, the Honda City and Toyota Vios are typically top of mind. But there’s one contender that’s begging for your attention, and it properly deserves it. Suzuki is no stranger to small cars, having manufactured some of the best in the industry, and while the Ciaz would hardly be considered small by today’s standards, Suzuki’s attention to detail and excellent build quality have translated nicely to the sub-compact.   Subtly stylish The Ciaz isn’t one of the flashier cars in the segment, but remains subtly handsome in its own way. Instead of following the trend of heavily stylized headlamps and aggressive front grilles, the Ciaz presents a pleasant, more mature fascia that emphasizes sophistication over flamboyance. Its well-proportioned side profile comes together with a slick rear end, complemented by …

Air China apologizes amid anger over magazine’ ‘racist article’

Air China and the publisher of its in-flight magazine have issued apologies in the wake of accusations of racism, after an image of an article from on board magazine "Wings of China” was posted on Twitter. The article, which has caused uproar in the UK and on social media, says in Chinese and English that “precautions are needed” for visitors going to areas of London “mainly populated by Indians, Pakistanis and black people.” A photo of the magazine article was posted to Twitter where it was quickly shared, with many users expressing outrage and accusing Air China of racism. Member of Parliament Virendra Sharma, who represents a constituency of London with a large ethnically Asian population, called the advice “blatantly untrue and racist.” Sharma, along with fellow London MP Rosena Allin-Khan, has approached …

Ssangyong’s fresh slate

It’s been a tough road for Korean car manufacturer, Ssangyong, both locally and in their home country. Once upon a time, Ssangyong seemingly had a solid future planned out. A technological partnership with, at the time, Daimler-Benz, produced the Ssangyong Musso, which saw minor success in certain markets, thanks to the Mercedes-Benz dealer network. Ssangyong further benefited from the alliance with products like the MB100, Korando, Rexton and Kyron, each sharing different Mercedes-Benz technologies ranging from engines to transmission systems. The success was short-lived, as financial troubles hit the company. Ssangyong then changed ownership from one conglomerate to the next, until 2011, when Ssangyong was acquired by Mahindra & Mahindra Limited, with a fresh injection of cash, resources, and, after decades of bumps along the road, a renewed sense of hope and …
