National Day of Sudan

Today is Sudan’s National Day. It was on January 1, 1956, that the country gained its independence from the Anglo-Egyptian Condominium, the joint British and Egyptian government that administered Sudan. Sudan’s capital and cultural and commercial center is Khartoum. Sudan was the largest country in the African continent until its government gave way for an independent South Sudan which is populated mainly by Christian and Animist people. Sudan and South Sudan split into two countries in July, 2011 after the people of South Sudan voted for independence. Sudan’s economy is fueled by agriculture, which employs around 80% of its labor force. Its major cash crops include cotton, wheat, cassava and sorghum millet, sugarcane, and fruit crops like mangoes, papaya and bananas.
