Venture into the void

The dream may have started back in 1939 when the View-Master was first introduced. Some of you might remember that plastic, binocular-like toy where you insert a special reel containing stills from fan-favorite movies and TV-shows (among others). A switch would have to be nudged on the side of the lens to cycle between picture-slides, leaving the rest to imagination. It would then take another 76 years for technology to allow us that Virtual Reality experience we all hoped for, that seamless immersion into another world. This year marks the release of three promising products that are set to lead the VR revolution, namely Facebook’s Oculus Rift, Valve’s HTC Vive and Sony’s PlayStation VR headsets. While they are powerful pieces of hardware, the amount a middle class gamer would need to …

The falsebook

Two out of 37 – that’s the number of selfies that usually make it past my friend’s brutal selection process and get uploaded. She jokingly calls the process 'finding her angle' but there's no denying the truth: what is seen online does not necessarily reflect what is real. The practice isn’t exactly new. While Lonelygirl15 of YouTube may be one of the earliest/most famous examples of an elaborate lie on social media, we have always been wary of letting other people see the ‘real’ us. We present our best foot forward in our CVs and on interviews; we sweep the floor and wipe the counters when we know someone is dropping by our house; and even the #nofilterphotos that we boast of have been cropped to our minute specifications. Nevertheless, even if …

Finding the perfect earbuds

There are many people like me who are constantly on their earphones while working out, doing chores or commuting around the city. It has become a sort of lifestyle to pass time with music, radio, podcasts or audiobooks when undertaking a number of routine tasks—especially those that include a lot of standing around and waiting in line. The whole endeavor might even prove enjoyable with the quality of what you are listening to, but the medium being used can make or break the overall experience. Technology had already freed us from the entanglement of wires with different types of Bluetooth headsets and headphones entering the market. There are some who find them very stylish and convenient, yet there are those who consider them too flashy to wear around every day or …

Most popular, worst passwords of 2015

Splash Data, a provider of security applications and services, has released on Tuesday (January 19, 2016) its list of worst passwords for the year that was. The fifth annual list reveals that “the most commonly used passwords are not necessarily more secure”, as published in the Teams ID blog. Passwords “123456” and “password” remained unchanged at the top two spots of the list, same as with 2014. The California-based team compiled and evaluated over two million leaked passwords, mostly from North America and Western Europe, during the year 2015 to persuade users to come up with stronger passwords for improved internet security. The top 25 passwords are as follows: 123456 – unchanged since 2014 password – unchanged since 2014 12345678 - up one rank qwerty - up one rank 12345 – down two ranks 123456789 – unchanged since 2014 football - up three rank 1234 …

Thinking out of the bottle

Awareness concerning plastic bottles and their environmental impact vary with different people. Most of us fail to grasp the big picture, that the world at large is continually nudged to an inhospitable place by our society's industrial excesses. The manufacturing of non-biodegradable plastic bottles is among those that contribute to some of our more enduring waste products. TEDed has an interesting video online that narrates the story of 3 disposed bottles; spoiler alert: two of them have bad endings— We start with their origin, these bottles are born through chemically bonding oil and gas molecules to form what are called monomers, which are then bonded into long polymer chains to form plastic pellets. They are then melted in manufacturing plants and injected into molds to form those small, durable containers to …

Siri, an interview

I began to jog the moment my car door shut. I’d hate to look flustered, but I was already 12 minutes late, and I couldn’t afford to be unpunctual – not with this interview, which I’ve been pursuing for several weeks now, and not with this woman, whose time, I am positive, is far more precious than gold. The café, overlooking the marina, was airy and spacious. Instead of piped-in music that often permeates such establishments, there was only the sound of waves and the familiar smell of coffee being expertly brewed, and enjoyed in peace. There were only a few people about - if that was a function of the early hour, or if she made sure that the place wouldn’t be crowded by reserving the whole place, I don’t …
