What to do when you’ve had a crappy week

Ever had one of those weeks when nothing seemed to be going your way? We all have those days, but I’m talking about the whole week, all seven days. Well, that’s what happened to me. It was an unrelenting milieu of bad days one after the other.  In this Instagrammable world, it seems like most people are having the time of their lives. No one seems to have an unsatisfactory moment let alone a whole crummy week. Well that’s not me. Bad days do happen. Weeks, too. Case in point. I was a pretty unhappy camper. For me, nothing seemed to go quite right. The week kicked off with my six-year-old choosing to really test us with an ultra defiant, I-don’t-care attitude that often traversed into an annoying and bullyish mode …

Ready for purée

Are you excited to let your baby try solid food and introduce him to a whole new world of flavors and textures? Who wouldn’t be? Admit it, though, that along with the excitement and anticipation for this important milestone, countless questions are racing through your mind.  Is my baby ready? When is the right time to start? What do I feed him first? What if my baby refuses to eat or spits out the food? How many times a day should he eat? How do I know if he’s full or wants more? Do I spoon-feed or let him eat on his own? At “The Cerelac Media Kick-off,” held recently at Earth Kitchen in Bonifacio Global City, Taguig, pediatrician and Philippine Pediatric Society diplomate Dr. Celeste Gomez answered these questions and more …

Baby’s day out

1. Bring his favorite toy. You don’t need to bring all of them (especially the bulky ones, leave those at home), but it is good to bring one or two in his top 10 list. This gives the child comfort especially since he/she is in a different environment. This is also a good distraction for your baby, especially when you’re in a place where he/she needs to be quiet (in an airplane/waiting area). 2. Pack the baby carrier in your handcarry bag. The baby carrier will be your best friend during your vacation as you will need it when sightseeing and traveling from airport to airport. This is especially important to have in the airport because if anything happens to the stroller (they lose it, break it) at least you …

The Bee of the Ball

On its seventh year  of  honoring the outstanding achievements of  select Filipinos, Mega Magazine held its annual Mega Pinoy Pride Ball at the Grand Ballroom of Shangri-la Hotel at the Fort.  The event, traditionally celebrated on Independence Day, brought together media luminaries, fashion visionaries, showbiz personalities, social media influencers, and other newsmakers.  All were present to recognize the best of the Filipino’s  beauty, talent, skill, and craftsmanship. VIP guests walked the red carpet and had cocktails provided by McCormick before entering the ballroom. I thoroughly enjoyed the five-course Filipino-themed dinner while appreciating the stunning  red floral centerpiece set up by Robert Blancaflor. Mega’s editor in chief Peewee Isidro took to the stage and welcomed everyone before introducing Issa Litton as the event’s host.  Singer Erik Santos, pop chanteuse Kyla, and international singing sensation Charice (who was herself a Mega Pinoy Global awardee that night) regaled the audience with their powerful vocal performances. Soon it was time to hand out the New PH awards to 2016’s finest men and women.  So it came as a wonderful surprise …

Cookie craze

Be they crunchy or chewy, plain, striped, or sprinkled with nuts and chocolate morsels, cookies are a favorite baon for school-age kids. But why buy the processed, prepacked, and with preservatives variety when you can easily make your own? Recently, pastry chef Miko Aspiras of the French-Japanese restaurant Le Petite Soufflé and the cookie craft shop Scout’s Honor in Makati showed moms how to get creative in the kitchen and give their kids better and healthier snacks (which they will eat!) For him, a cookie is an obvious choice for baon because it’s cheap and easy to make. One can just whip up the dough, freeze it wrapped in foil, and then just bake as needed. Frozen dough can last for about three months while dough put on chiller can last for …

Don’t serve junk!

One of the most frequent questions I get is how to get children to eat healthy. This week, I want to give you two easy recipes that are quick, easy, healthy, and, above all, delicious. We all know that if food doesn’t taste good, kids simply won’t eat it. When I talk to moms about their children’s eating habits, the best advice I can give is to start healthy eating early, right at the beginning. As soon as your children are ready to eat solid food, provide healthy whole foods. Stay away from processed food and, of course, junk food. If they are old now, don’t worry. You can always train them to enjoy healthy dishes. It just takes a little more patience and perseverance. People’s palates are shaped when they are …

The Zest for success

Dressed in a red jersey dress, Michelle Asence Fontelera greeted me with a big smile, a beso, and a hug, “Paulyne, you’re looking fab! Glad you could make it.” It was the 15th anniversary of local fragrance brand Zen Zest and its beautiful CEO was busy receiving guests to the by-invitation-only afternoon affair at Le Petit Soufflé in Century City Mall. The romantic French country setting with crawling vines, lush faux trees, and delicate white furniture was perfect for the event. Pastel-colored flowers adorned the long table where the full line of products was on display for everyone to smell and choose from. Yes, the first order of the day was to pick out your favorite scents from the wonderful spread of Zen Zest fragrances. I, however, decided to leave …
