A Celebration of the Human Spirit

Born from the genius collaboration of visionary producer Cameron Mackintosh, composer Claude-Michel Schönberg, and lyricist Alain Boublil, Les Miserables is presently hailed as the longest running musical in the world. Inspired by Victor Hugo’s 1861 classic novel of the same title, the show—which according to Mackintosh first opened to lukewarm reviews—is seen by over 70 million people and has continued to play in packed theater, bringing together old fans and new patrons. Why does this production survive and thrive for as long as it has? Why does it continue to enthrall, excite, and inspire? As Filipinos, we feel an affinity for Les Mis because it has featured many of our own talented thespians. Lea Salonga played both Fantine and Eponine on Broadway and London’s West End. Joanna Ampil followed in her …

No Gadgets, Please

Recently, I’ve been noticing just how addicted everyone (including me!) is to their gadgets. This is nothing new of course but it’s an epidemic that has somehow become the new normal. I often hanker for a time when social dinners and coffee dates meant everyone actually had substantial conversations that were uninterrupted by furtive glances at a mobile phone or by the perennial need to document every second from ordering to the serving of the dishes, via photos or text updates. I was running last Saturday around my neighborhood when I almost got run over by a motorcyclist who was busy texting as he pulled out of a driveway. That same run saw me almost colliding with three people who were walking on the sidewalk, their heads down and their …

A Cable Fair for the Whole Family

Kids and their parents trooped to SMX, Mall of Asia recently to participate in “Sky Alive!” the first-ever family cable fair organized by Sky Cable Corporation in celebration of its 25th anniversary. Skycable’s extensive and rich channel line-up was showcased with booths that offered exciting activities, prizes, and freebies. Kids had the rare opportunity to meet their favorite TV characters like The Powerpuff Girls, OO-Kun, Spongebob Squarepants, Patrick Star, Dora The Explorer, and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles while teeners got to snap selfies with today’s most popular cosplayers. A hit in the fair is the Game of Throne’s iron throne where participants can sit and take a picture with “Jon Snow” and “Daenerys.”

A Blessed Life

It must have been intuition that made celebrity couple John Prats and Isabel Oli give the name Lilly Feather to their soon-to-be-born daughter. Because as a fan would point out in a tweet, days after the news broke out, the first two letters of each of the names, when combined, make “LiFe.” And truly, LiFe is “life” for the super excited couple. In fact, Isabel has taken time off showbiz to become a hands-on mom to her daughter. She is due to give birth this coming April. “We really wanted something unique for her. So we thought of ‘feather.’ It’s a nice word, very light, easy,” explains Isabel, who got the shock of her life (and good thing she did not give birth right then and there!) when family and friends suddenly greeted them at what was supposed to be—as what John had told her—the birthday party of a friend. The …

Cotton Candy and Cupcakes

It’s vacation time! My four-year-old daughter R could not contain her excitement as I showed her the invitation to an event. It had colorful donuts, gummy bears, lollies, and a big slice of cake. “I want to go! I want to go!” she jumped up and down. So early morning last Saturday, she dressed up in her gray-fringed dress and Frozen boots, all from H&M. We were, after all, headed to the H&M and Celebrity Mom Shopping Play Date at SM Makati. The Kids’ section was teeming with excited toddlers when we arrived. My daughter was given a cupcake liner with different tokens so she could enjoy the different booths that were set up. She immediately made a beeline for the cotton candy station. Even I was impressed with the pink …

Perfect finds

When I find a company with a philosophy that resonates with my own, I do a little happy dance. Anak Anak is one such company. Nature. Nurture. Culture. These are the three key ingredients that set this baby brand apart from the rest. The inspiration for this company was borne among three multicultural Filipina friends—mom of two Roisin Hansen, mom of one Vanessa Small, and mom-to-be Carmen Booth—and their desire to provide today’s modern mama with products that will help galvanize her adventures in motherhood. The principal products in the range are designed with a child’s comfort in mind, using all-natural materials. They also partner with entrepreneurs and small businesses around the world to bring a unique selection of eclectic goods that you wouldn’t otherwise know about. Anak Anak’s first partnership is …

Love After Separation

Dear Suzi and Paolo,   Hi. This is actually for a friend of mine. She is a single mom with a seven-year-old son. She and the father of the boy lived together for a while but separated two years ago. The relationship between them is strained although the father still goes to the house every now and then to visit the boy. Late last year, she met someone who she introduced to her son just this year. Problem is, her son did not like him and would always throw a tantrum whenever the guy visits. Do you have any advice on how to make her son understand the situation? What can she tell him to make him accept the guy? Is it normal for kids to do this? Will it change in time?   Cyrene …

Color me glam

Everyone always assumes that when your previous profession was modeling and television hosting, you are always super glam and put together. The truth is, I’m not a real “girly girl.” I’ve never been much into makeup, or clothes, or accessorizing. Don’t get me wrong, I do like to dress up and I certainly appreciate lovely clothes, jewelry, bags, and shoes but it’s not a passion of mine. Throughout the years, I’ve had hundreds of makeup artists do my face and yet, I still fumble with the basics. I’ve always let my face be the canvas for experts without really watching what they were doing. Lost opportunities, now in hindsight. I could have gleaned tips from the best in the biz all these years. Everyday Makeup Tips 1. A good skincare routine is very important to ensure that skin is in its best condition before applying makeup. Remember less is …
