Eduardo Roy Jr.’s “Pamilya Ordinaryo”  received  five awards including  Best Film at the 12th Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival during the awards ceremony held Sunday at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) Main Theater. “Pamilya Ordinaryo” tells the story of two young parents, Jane (Hasmin Killip) and Aries (Ronwaldo Martin), who live in the streets. Their already complicated life goes haywire when their Baby Arjan gets kidnapped by a stranger. Roy also won the Best Direction trophy, which he dedicated to his friend, the late Francis Xavier Pasion. “Siguro kung nandito siya, isa siya sa mga pumapalakpak dahil nagsisimula pa lang po kami sa telebisyon, hanggang sa nag-indie kami, kami ’yung laging nag-uusap tungkol sa kung ano ’yung kwento namin, ’yung concept namin, at kung ano ’yung isa-submit namin sa Cinemalaya,” he …

All hail the Comedy Concert Queen

Actress Ai-Ai delas Alas is back on the concert scene via “Ai Meets Lani: Lani May Ai” in collaboration with Asia’s Nightingale Lani Misalucha. It is her first concert since “Ai-Ai Sa Araneta” held six years ago. Ai-Ai admitted she missed performing live. “’Yun naman talaga ang first love ko kaya ginagawa ko ulit,” she said. With that, she reminded everyone how Concert King Martin Nievera dubbed her The Comedy Concert Queen because she was the only non-singing celebrity who could sellout concerts back in the day. “Nu’ng panahon ng mga magagaling na singers natin tulad nina Zsa Zsa Padilla at Pops Fernandez, sila lang talaga ’yung nakakapuno ng mga venue na talagang kumakanta, ako lang ’yung hindi (ganun kagaling kumanta),” Ai-Ai shared. “Minsan kumakanta pa nga ako kahit walang lyrics, medyo katunog lang …

Rachel back on stage via ‘Love/Sick’

Once an actress, always an actress, they say, and Rachel Alejandro proves it. A year after her last performance as The Witch in a local staging of “Into The Woods,” the 42-year-old singer-actress is back in theater via “Love/Sick,” a romantic comedy featuring nine intertwined vignettes that explore different stories of love and heartbreak. In it, she plays numerous characters and keeping in mind the advice of John Cariani, the writer of the play, Rachel tried not to be “overly concerned” of the characters. “Hindi kailangan magbago-bago ng itsura, mag-disguise or something. Sabi niya (Cariani), each story naman is different enough at lalabas at lalabas ’yung iba’t-ibang character,” she said. Rachel doesn’t just act in the show, she is also its producer. She is thankful some of her friends in the industry agreed to …

Let’s talk about breaking up

It sometimes takes courage to pursue love but always, ending one requires a different kind of bravery altogether. As Neil Sedaka puts up, breaking up is hard to do and you better believe it. But who gets hurt the most, the one who initiates it or the one on the receiving end? Actress-dancer Yassi Pressman believes it’s always the one who got dumped “kasi usually hindi siya prepared at ready.” Thespian Kim Molina disagrees, believing its harder for the dumper. “Kasi kung ikaw ’yung nakipag-break kailangan may maayos kang reason kung bakit mo ginawa or bakit kailangan mong makipaghiwalay sa taong mahal mo kahit na alam mong mahal ka niya,” she said. Bela Padilla stands on the same side of the fence, noting, “’Pag ikaw nakipag-break marami kang tanong na, ‘Pwede pa ba? Pwede bang …

Cinemalaya 2016: Vibe so alive

The 12th Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival is a soul-satisfying joyride especially when experienced at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP). Being its home, the vibe is strongest there especially with the gala screenings attended by the stars and the filmmakers. The other sections outside the main competition also give the cineaste a taste for different kinds of indie films not easily available on the big screen elsewhere. Though there are only two days left in this year’s festival, these tips could still come in handy in maximizing the Cinemalaya experience: 1. Cameras ready It’s always a photo-worthy kind of day what with tons of posters and playbills on exhibit there. Just be patient in taking that perfect shot because everyone seems to be thinking of the same thing. Also, keep an eye out …

Ready for love

Don’t be fooled by her looks. Barbie Forteza might still look very much like the little girl we all loved all these years, but at 19, she’s definitely all grown-up now and ready for love. Barbie herself attested to this, saying, “Nasa right age na naman ako. Wala namang masama.” As if to dispel notions such things could divert her attention from work, she added, “Hindi ko naman siya ite-take as a distraction sa work, more of like inspiration.” So, what is she looking for in a guy, we asked. Barbie said, “Gusto ko gwapo. Gusto ko palaging mabango, saka gusto ko isa lang ’yung pabangong ginagamit niya para ’pag naamoy ko ’yun somewhere siya lang maiisip ko.” Attitude-wise, she likes someone who is “mabait sa parents ko. Gusto rin ng ma-effort tapos nire-respeto ako …

Ballet Philippines soars at 47

The Cultural Center of the Philippines’ (CCP) resident ballet company, Ballet Philippines, takes flight this month as they welcome their 47th season aptly titled, “Wings.” According to Ballet Philippines’ Artistic Director, Paul Alexander Morales, it signifies the “metaphorical wish natin na makaangat pa hindi lang as a ballet company, but as a nation and to break free from the things that hold us down and reach higher levels especially for our arts and the stability of ballet in the Philippines.” Kicking off the festivity is “Firebird,” an original ballet piece by Russian composer, Igor Stravinsky, based on a Russian fairy tale about a magical glowing bird, which can be both a blessing and a curse to its owner. This is the third re-imagination of “Firebird” by Ballet Philippines, with the company having already …

Liza, Enrique not an item yet

Enrique Gil considers it like it’s a done deal but Liza Soberano doesn’t exactly agree. In a recent press conference, she clarified her love team partner’s most recent statement on “Tonight With Boy Abunda” that they “treat each other like boyfriend-girlfriend, so yeah, we’re boyfriend and girlfriend.” “Of course, we’re a love team and we take care of each other, but when you say we treat each other like boyfriend-girlfriend like kissing and dating and stuff, none of that is happening yet,” the actress explained. She added they are just “friends” and “not dating.” Unless they totally disappoint many of their fans, Liza quickly added she is open to the possibility of them ending up as lovers in the future. “If time permits and when my parents allow us, why not? Personally, we have this …
