ASG leader falls, kidnap gang member arrested

Zamboanga City – A  sub-leader of an Abu Sayyaf Group  (ASG)  and a  notorious  member of  a Kidnap for Ransom Group operating in Sibugay province were both arrested  by the police in Sibugay province in two separate occasions last Saturday  and Sunday. Zamboanga Peninsula Police Director Chief Supt Billy Beltran identified the ASG sub-leader as Hasim Calon alias Gingging and Husien and Marjuk Dacula, a member of the Mamay Aburi and Reming Sabtal Kidnap for Ransom Groups both  operating  in  Sibugay province. Beltran said Colon and  Dacula were  tagged as responsible for several  kidnapping  incidents  in Sibugay province. Second Indonesian hostage recovered

Zamboanga City  – A few hours after an Indonesian sailor abducted by Abu Sayyaf bandits  was rescued off the shores of  Luuk town in Sulu Wednesday, his compatriot was recovered by the military.  Major Filemon Tan Jr., spokesperson of the Western Mindanao Command (WesMinCom) said the Indonesian hostage identified as Ismail was recovered on a road leading to Barangay Bual in Luuk, Sulu. Ismail is the chief officer of Indonesian tugboat Charles who was abducted by Abu Sayyaf  bandits along with five sailors two months ago in the high seas of  Sulu and Malaysia. Ismail’s crewmember, Mohammad Sayfan, 26 was earlier rescued by local  residents of  Barangay Luuk after he got entangled in the fishnets along the shoreline. Zambo gov’t to reject any plea bargaining deal with MNLF

Zamboanga City  – The city government will continue to oppose and reject any plea bargaining agreement that may be entered into by the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) panel of prosecutors and the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) leaders and members, who were involved in the  21-day siege in September 2013 in this city. City Legal Officer Jesus C. Carbon, Jr., manifested anew to the Regional Trial Court in Pasig City, the unequivocal and unwavering stand of Zamboanga City against any plea bargaining with MNLF leaders and members accused of rebellion and two counts of violations of the International Humanitarian Law in connection with the Zamboanga siege. Indonesian hostage escapes from ASG

Zamboanga City – One of six Indonesian sailors abducted by Abu Sayyaf bandits two months ago escaped from his captors yesterday morning after they threatened to behead him, Maj. Filemon Tan, the spokesperson of the Western Mindanao Command (WesMinCom) said. Mohammad Sayfan, 26 was trapped in the fishnets laid out at the shoreline of Barangay Bual and Bato-Itum, Luuk town in Sulu at about 7:30 a.m. yesterday and was rescued by local residents who saw him floating in the water. He was taken to the Luuk Municipal Hall and the Sulu Provincial Police office for processing and documentation. Sayfan said he was kept by the bandits at the mangrove area and escaped after he heard his captors talking about his scheduled beheading. Two major ASG camps recovered by military in Basilan

ZAMBOANGA CITY  –Government troops recovered Monday morning, a well fortified camp and equip with bunkers, tunnels and foxholes of the Abu Sayyaf Group at Hill 355 in Barangay Silangkum, Tipo-Tipo, Basilan province. Soldiers of the 4th Special Forces Battalion under Joint Task Force Basilan also recovered two Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) inside the camp. Major Filemon Tan, spokesman of the Armed Forces Of the Philippines – Western Mindanao Command (WestMinCom) said yesterday the IED were contained on a 60 mm mortar shell, coupled with some nails, coins, a 9-volg battery, a plastic box, wires, switch, and an improvised electric blasting cap. P50.4-M infra projects set in Tawi-Tawi island towns

Zamboanga City  – The Department of Public Works and Highways-Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (DPWH-ARMM)  will  implement P50.4 million worth of infrastructure projects in three island towns in Tawi-Tawi to fueled socio-economic growth. DPWH-ARMM Secretary Engineer Don Loong said  a  memorandum of agreement  (MOA)  for the  early implementation of the projects in the province was signed by  Tawi-Tawi Gov. Ras Matba and ARMM Governor Mujiv Hataman, Thursday in Cotabato City. Loong also signed the MOA. Sibutu, Simunul and Sitangkai are island towns in Tawi-Tawi that are far from  the municipality of Bongao where  the  seat of the provincial government is located. Zamboanga City – A hero’s welcome awaits Zamboanguena weightlifter and Olympic silver medalist Hidilyn Diaz when she arrives here Monday after her triumphant stint in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. According to the City Mayor Maria Isabelle Climaco,  the 25-year-old Diaz will be feted to a city-wide parade before she will be given a P5 million-bonus for her record-breaking fete in the Rio Olympics. Diaz shattered a 20-year medal drought for the Philippines in the Olympics when she finished second place in the 53-kilogram weight class of the weightlifting competitions. ASG bandits kidnap Muslim cleric, couple

Zamboanga City – Despite the presence of  thousands of military and police authorities  in Patikul, Sulu, the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) succeeded in kidnapping a Muslim cleric and a couple last Saturday. A military report reaching this city yesterday   identified the victims as Sharif Julhasan Abirin, Levi Gonzales, who is a technician of Globe Telecom, and his pregnant  wife Daniella Taruc.
