Agri-Pinoy Program set to assist farmers in ARMM

ZAMBOANGA CITY -- The Department of Agriculture and Fisheries of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (DAF-ARMM) will provide assistance to 64,271 farmers and 866 agriculture groups during the first quarter of 2016 under its Agri-Pinoy Program. DAF-ARMM Secretary Alexander Alonto said the department has already lined up its programs and projects for the entire year. It aims to empower farmers and farming communities in the Muslim-dominated region. “We assure all the farmers that the lined-up programs for 2016 will be implemented to support them,” Alonto said. Alonto added that the region is targeting to harvest a total of 659,970 metric tons of agricultural products this 2016, while 230,759 hectares of land would be planted with crops this year. Misuari hiding in plain sight in Sulu

Zamboanga City – Fugitive Nur Misuari has reportedly been hiding in plain sight in Sulu, openly mingling with local folk, who have have remained loyal to the founding chairman of the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) and have protected him from government authorities out to get him for his complicity in 2013 Zamboanga siege. This was confirmed by Sulu Vice Governor Abdusakur Tan who said that 76-year-old Misuari, who was born in Tapul, Sulu, “was just hiding in one of the towns (in Sulu) to avoid being arrested by the people.” “Misuari is in Sulu and his presence in the province is of public knowledge,” Tan told the Manila Bulletin. Sulu Vice Governor Abdusakur Tan confirmed on January 15, 2016, that the  former chair of the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) Nurulaji "Nur" Misuari is in Sulu and is just hiding in one of the  towns in the province to avoid being arrested by the police. Tan said “Misuari is in Sulu” and his presence in the province is of public knowledge. Misuari is just hiding Sulu from pursuing authorities to avoid being arrested for his string of criminal cases, among them was the siege in Zamboanga City in September 2013, Tan said. Tan also said that the recent gatherings of former MNLF forces in Indanan, Sulu have not disturbed the peace of the town. Zambo City under state of calamity

Zamboanga City – The city  council yesterday approved a resolution placing the entire city under a state of calamity  to  prevent further destruction to  farm products and produce that may be caused by  the  El Niño phenomenon. City Council Floor Leader Charlie Mariano said a majority of the council members has  voted  in favor  to the recommendation of the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (CDRRMC) in this city  to place the entire city under the state of calamity. “We have immediately acted  on the  recommendation of   the  CDRRMC in order to allow local and national government agencies to provide the needed requirements to  counter the  destruction that may be caused by the dry spell,” he said. PDP-Laban fears massive cheating in May polls

Zamboanga City – There is a possibility of massive cheating in the May polls if the Commission on Elections (Comelec) will not restore the “four safety measures” it removed from the programs in each of the Precinct Count Optical Scanner (PCOS) machine which will be used in the May polls. This is the fear expressed by the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban). PDP-Laban Secretary General Benito Ranque said the party is totally disturbed why Comelec has to remove the four safety features of the PCOS machine. MNLF to attend confab in Sulu

ZAMBOANGA CITY – About 5,000 former combatants of the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) will converge for an assembly in Indanan, Sulu from January 8-16, where they will have a meeting with their forces. More than 100 MNLF members surfaced on Thursday, despite the high alert level status raised in the city. Zamboanga City Police Office Director Sr. Supt Angelito Casimiro said that the MNLF members coming from the neighboring provinces of Zamboanga Sibugay, Zamboanga del Sur and Sarangani province are on their way to the wharf to take a ferry boat en-route to Sulu to attend a general meeting of the MNLF organization. Water rationing to start in Zamboanga

Zamboanga City – The Zamboanga City Water District (ZCWD)  will start water rationing in this city  tomorrow after  the weir that serves as a barometer to the current potable water level hit a new record low last week at  74.10 meters. ZCWD General Manger Leonardo Rey Vasquez said yesterday the water level source of the city continued to slide down hitting a new low record at 74.10 meters last week.  Normal level is at 74.20 meters. Vasquez  said  the ZCWD has divided the city into three major zones which will be supplied potable water for  only 12 hours daily. Gov’t troops rescue 26 abducted by ASG bandits

Zamboanga City – Government authorities rescued 26 passengers of a passenger jeepney, six hours after they were seized by  suspected members of the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) Sunday  in a remote sitio in the town of  Ungkaya Pukan in  Basilan province. A belated report reaching this city said military troops, responding to a report of abduction, recovered the victims six hours after they were snatched at the boarder of  Barangay  Pipil in Ungkaya Pukan. The victims were not harmed while the  suspects fled to the inner forested areas of the village upon sensing the arrival of  government troops, the police reported. Business permit renewal starts Monday

Zamboanga City – The renewal of business permits will start on Monday, Jan. 4, the first working day of 2016, using the Business One Stop Shop (BOSS) system. City officials said more people are expected to flock city hall to process the permits as the deadline is on Jan. 20. City Mayor Maria Isabelle Climaco said late filers will be paying an additional 25 percent as  surcharge per quarter and two percent  additional surcharge per month. Climaco said the BOSS initiative will make registration and renewal of business permits more convenient to businessmen.
