Story of the Voice Master

Pocholo Gonzales’ dream as a young boy was to be a factory worker (afraid sa endo!). He was inspired by neighbors in Mariveles, Bataan who had their own factories. Until destiny heard his voice and brought him to a different career (sana pakinggan din ako ni destiny!). “Our primary means of entertainment back then was radio. I was seven years old when I would listen to ‘Gabi Ng Lagim’ and imitate the voices in the program. I remember my classmates would request me to do voices of cartoon characters, famous celebrities and our teachers!” Pocholo a.k.a. the Voice Master recalled. He eventually auditioned for a radio drama on DZMM (might as well ’di ba?!). “I was a freshman at UP Diliman that time. I became one of the youngest radio drama talents in DZMM. …

The power of four

For a lot of performers, it is fulfilling to collaborate with fellow artists (lalo na kung wala naman silang ginagawang iba!). I could mean a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity or a long-term career (gusto ko ng long term career!). Cornerstone Management is presenting the concert “Divas” featuring talented singers Kyla, KZ Tandingan, Yeng Constantino and Angeline Quinto (ako na lang ang kulang!) on Nov. 11 at the Araneta Coliseum. “Naisip ni (manager) Sir Ericson Raymundo, na bilang magkakapatid naman kami sa Cornerstone, bakit di kami pagsama-samahin. Pare-pareho kaming nanalo mula sa mga singing competitions at never pa kami napagsama sa iisang concert,” KZ said. Now, some people may have a negative connotation of the term “diva” but for these belters, being a diva can be a positive title (gusto ko maging diva!). “Sabi kasi nila, ’pag …

From Japan with love

Some 10 years ago, Japanese rock band UchuSentai Noiz visited the Philippines to initiate a special outreach activity focusing on less fortunate Filipino children (may puso ang Hapon!). Composed of singer Angel Taka, guitarists Kotaro and Masato, drummer Yamato, and bassist Kyo, the band eventually fell in love with the country. Later, they recorded a cover of Kamikazee’s “Narda,” which caught the attention of millions of netizens (kayo na ang viral!). “We heard about kids who didn’t even have toothbrush because they don’t have money. We decided to visit your country and help these kids. We love the Filipinos, we kept on coming back and discovered the lovely song of Kamikazee,” Angel said (parang ako lang sarap balik-balikan!). In 2014, they released a video performance of Rivermaya’s “Liwanag Sa Dilim,” Rocksteddy’s “Superhero” and …

Return of all-OPM playlist

Due to insistent public demand (may nagde-demand talaga?!), 106.7 Energy FM has brought back “Pinoy Playbor” featuring current and re-current Pinoy songs from sun up to sun down (walang tulugan!). Radio jocks, Lindsay and Sheena host the morning slots while Jim takes the afternoon shift (bawal daw sapawan!). “Nu’ng pansamantalang nawala ang ‘Pinoy Playbor,’ dinagsa kami ng mga comments on our social media accounts, requesting us to bring back our all-OPM Saturday programming. This is good news to the OPM industry. At least we know, OPM has a great number of followers, na dapat naman talaga!” Lindsay says. To further boost this special programming, Sheena’s daily show, “TopSikat,” features the top OPM hits and guests OPM artists (todo na to!). “Siyempre sa daily programming namin, halo-halo na ang songs, mapa local and foreign. …

Ylona Garcia on life after ‘PBB’

It’s been a year since Ylona Garcia’s stint on “Pinoy Big Brother (PBB)” but she still remembers it all like it was just yesterday. (May tinatawag tayong moving on, girl!)  “Medyo malungkot pa rin kasi I’ve been in the ‘PBB’ house for seven months. You get attached talaga. So getting out of the house and being in the outside world is parang iba ’yung feeling,” Ylona admits. She has this to say to the aspiring winners of the current batch of “PBB”  housemates: “Always give your best. Focus on me! Joke! Focus on why you came to ‘PBB’ house. Minsan kasi we get carried away talaga pero just focus on your purpose. Give it your all and enjoy. That (experience) is once in a lifetime!” (’Di ako makapag-focus ’pag nakikita ko na …

Compilation of love advice ala FU

Several years ago, a lot of people (including my former manager Noel Ferrer) encouraged me to write a book featuring the love advice I give on my now eight-year-old radio show. However, I told them I didn’t have the guts to do it (o baka tinatamad lang ako, chos!). Recently, director Joven Tan, who regularly listens to my show, convinced me to pursue the project (akala ko pa naman aalukin na ’ko ng launching movie!). He suggested the title “Juice Ko FU” and I agreed (o baka ayaw ko lang mag-isip!). He asked the publishers of Mind Master Publishing to meet with me. After several days, I just found myself doing the pages of the book “Juice Ko FU, Anong Lasa Ng Love Mo?” (ura-urada! Wala nang hanash-hanash!). My assistant Emily, the …

Michael Pangilinan continues career ascent

I first noticed singer-actor Michael Pangilinan on the now-defunct GMA TV show “Walang Tulugan” hosted by the late German “Kuya Germs” Moreno. (Pinuyat mo ko bro!) Michael acknowledged he owes The Master Showman a lot. “Okay ’yung show na ’yun. Sabado ng madaling araw, ’pag wala ka na mapanood, ’yun na mapapanood mo. Binigyan ako talaga ng malaking break ni tatay du’n sa show,” he said in an interview on my radio show. Now, Michael shines even brighter on ABS-CBN, which comes as no surprise for somebody gifted as him. (Gifted daw oh!) Michael feels blessed following the slew of projects he has been getting from the Kapamilya Network. He is currently promoting his eponymous album released by the network’s recording arm, Star Music. (Na hubad kung hubad sa cover ha!) “I consider this parang …

From mayor, with love

Whenever the producer sends food to the production team or a fan brings delicacies for his idol during tapings and shoot, the staff would joke: “May padala si mayor!” (Lalo ngayong sikat si mayor ha!) With this in mind, our show “Ang Tagabulabog ng Buong Universe” on 106.7 Energy FM (8 a.m.-11 a.m. Monday to Friday) recently launched a radio and online treat dubbed “Bigay ni Mayor!” (Close kami ni mayor ha!) “It is our way of showing gratitude to our listeners (who've been loyal to us) for the past 8 years. We have introduced several radio and online promos in the past, but this is extra special since it involves a lot of gimmicks and a number of supporters and friends who are willing to show the mayor in them,” said …

The continuing evolution of Sponge Cola

One of the biggest achievements of Sponge Cola, composed of Yael, Gosh, Armoc and Tmac, is their staying power. (May power daw o!) “Para lang kaming Kobe Bryant. High school pa lang nasa NBA na. First gig namin ng 2001, high school kami. 15 years na kami,” Yael recalls. He believes their friendship is the one most important ingredient to their success: “Tsaka ’yung pa-easy easy lang kami. Pa-easy easy tapos masipag.” (Easy talaga? ’Di pwedeng hard mga bro?!) With their more than a decade stint on the music scene, the multi-awarded band has learned to value life outside showbiz. (May value, how much po?) “Be in touch with your high school friends! Sila ’yung friends mo na ’di ka pa artista, kilala ka nila bilang kaklase nila. Malaking bagay ’yun para you stay …

Pogi is forever

Music icon Ogie Alcasid has been in the industry for decades now but he has maintained his youthful pogi looks. (May pinapahid kaya siya sa fez?!) “Smile, ngiti,” he says. “’Yun lang naman talaga dapat lagi (para di tumanda). Dapat di nawawala ’yung pagiging masayahin.” With this in mind, Ogie and his management team decided to call his Music Museum concert on Aug.26 and 27 “Ayokong Tumanda.” This show is for all ages, including the Millennials,“ he says. (Ay, pwede. Kasama naman pala kaming mga tropa kong Millennials!) “Ayokong Tumanda” also features guest performers from Ogie’s own management team namely Davey Langit, Lara Maigue and Q-York. There are also veteran concert performers Ai-Ai Delas Alas, Ryan Cayabyab and …
