Teachers on poll duty to receive P4,500

Like in the May 2013 polls, public school teachers, who will serve as Board of Election Inspectors (BEIs) in the May 2016 polls will again receive a P4,500 honorarium. In Resolution No. 10031 dated December 22, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) said the BEI chairperson and members of the BEIs shall receive a per diem at the rate of P1,000 a day for three days or a total per diem of P3,000. This is aside from the P500 that each teacher will receive for the verification and sealing of the Book of Voters, another P500 for the final testing and sealing of the vote counting machines, and another P500 for transportation allowance. Iloilo parish to organize Catholic mass weddings during Jubilee Year of Mercy

With the increasing number of couples resorting to a "live-in" arrangement nowadays, a parish in Iloilo is offering unmarried Catholic couples an opportunity to get married this Jubilee Year of Mercy. Msgr. Sergio Jamoyot, rector of the Archdiocesan Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima in Iloilo City, said the observance is “a very good opportunity for unmarried couples to have their unions solemnized in Church.” The shrine is one of the churches in the archdiocese designated for the Jubilee as a pilgrimage church with its own Holy Door. This, in part is the New Year’s wish for the country of Basilan Bishop Martin Jumoad in view of the upcoming elections in May. “May we be able to also elect a leader who can inspire and discipline Filipinos,” he said in an interview. Jumoad also wished for less traffic, better transportation system, no more waste of NFA rice, no more hunger, and no more killings in Mindanao. “Above all may we become more prayerful as a nation,” he said. The Iglesia Ni Cristo (INC) was granted four new Guinness World Records in its New Year’s celebrations in Bocaue, Bulacan. These are for the largest paying audience for a movie premier (for the premier of the movie Felix Manalo); the most number of sparklers lit in relay; the most number of sparklers lit simultaneously; and the largest fireworks display. According to INC, the announcement for the first record was given in the evening of December 31. The three other records were given early morning of January 1 by Christina Conlon, official adjudicator of Guinness World Records. Bro. Edwil Zabala, INC spokesperson, said 2,000 people took part in the second and third Guinness records. “Both having to do with lighting sparklers,” he said.
