2 cop officials face raps for murder of CCW regional head

Pinamalayan, Oriental Mindoro — Police have criminally charged two junior police officials allegedly involved in Sunday’s killing of Citizens Crime Watch (CCW) regional head, Zenaida M. Luz, 51, in front of her house in Barangay Maligaya, Gloria town, this province. Senior Superintendent Christopher C. Mangyan community has biggest number of solo parents – DSWD

Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro – A barangay in Oriental Mindoro which is populated mostly by Mangyan natives has been found to have the biggest number of solo parents in MIMAROPA (Oriental Mindoro, Occidental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Palawan or Region 4B). In its 2015 Listahanan database, the Department of Social Welfare and Development-MIMAROPA said that Barangay Panaytayan in Mansalay town located in southern Mindoro has 155 poor solo parents followed by Barangay Bancalaan, Balabac in Palawan with 152 poor solo parents and Barangay Sicsican in Puerto Princesa City with 124. The DSWD reported also that there are 69,646 or 2.7 percent of the 2,573,992 total assessed individuals who claimed to be solo parents, which comprises of 19,722 (28.3 percent) males and 49,924 (71.7 percent) females in MIMAROPA region. The story behind Puerto Galera’s Galleon Festival

Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro — Mayor Rockey D. Ilagan has endorsed the adoption of  the Galleon Festival as the official festival of Puerto Galera that will be held annually every first week of December. Ilagan said he is in favor of holding the festival which will coincide with the religious celebration of the town fiesta on December 7-8. The festival is a joint religious-historical celebration that traces the roots of the town with the arrival of  Spanish armada on board  armed galleons. Palawan tops regional list of poor cultural minorities

Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro – The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) announced yesterday that Palawan province has the most number of poor indigenous peoples (IPs) among the five provinces in MIMAROPA (Oriental Mindoro, Occidental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Palawan). In its report, DSWD-MIMAROPA said Palawan has 38,463 households of IPs followed by Oriental Mindoro with 10,323 households, then Occidental Mindoro with 7,876, Romblon, 1,862 and four in Marinduque. DSWD’s Listahanan database shows that there are 58,528 identified poor households or 317,924 individuals or IPs in the region which comprises 28.2 percent of the total poor households. Listahanan, a government mechanism to identify the real poor in the communities, shows that there are 5,664 IP households living in rural barangays while 52,864 households are living in urban barangays.Listahanan assessment and validation was conducted …

MIMAROPA posts poor economic performance

Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro — Region 4-B or MIMAROPA (Oriental Mindoro, Occidental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Palawan) posted a dismal economic performance for 2015 when its economy decelerated to 1.7 percent from 8.3 in 2014 which could be attributed to the downturn in industry particularly mining operations. In her report, Leni R. Rioflorido, regional director of Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) said this poor performance has put the MIMAROPA region in 16th place among the Philippine’s 17 regions second only to Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao (ARRM) in the bottom. Director Rioflorido said that MIMAROPA posted lower growth rates with a per capita gross domestic product (GDP) estimated at P39,495 in 2015, 47.2 percent lower than the P74,770 national per capita GDP. 4 Mangyans join 1,091 drug users surrendering in Naujan

Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro — Four Mangyan tribesmen were among the drug personalities who surrendered to police authorities in Naujan town last Thursday. Chief Superintendent Wilben M. Oriental Mindoro seeks prompt action on chronic power supply woes

Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro – Mindoro residents and local electric cooperative officials are calling for the urgent action and intervention of incoming Energy Secretary Alfonso G. Cusi  in  resolving once and for all the unstable power supply in the province. Engr. Patrocinio M. Panagsagan, general manager of Oriental Mindoro Electric Cooperative (ORMECO) said his office has been flooded daily with complaints from consumers, particularly in the second congressional district which is reeling from power failures. Panagsagan explained that the power supply situation in southern Mindoro is very critical, with only less that 0.8 megawatts reserved capacity due mainly to increasing demand for power  and the damaged power transmission lines due typhoon Nona.
