Tom Ford on directing, being ‘nocturnal animal’

Los Angeles – We expected nothing but impeccable sharpness and glamour when fashion designer-turned-filmmaker Tom Ford walked into the room of the Shangri-La hotel in Toronto. He did not disappoint. Wearing a crisp white shirt, black suit and tinted glasses, the 55-year-old fashionista-turned cineaste met with us to talk about his second venture into filmmaking, the psychological thriller “Nocturnal Animals.” The movie is based on the 1993 novel “Tony And Susan” by Austin Wright. “When I’m writing, I usually write almost by shot,” Tom explained his style of approach with the film. “Every single thing whether it’s the way a shot looks, whether it’s the way someone is dressed, whether it’s the atmosphere in the film, it has to be a part of the story and it has to convey something important.” He …

Then she gamely did a swing with co-star Ronnie Lazaro (who portrayed Abu Azali in “Captive”) to the applause of the cast and crew. “I really had fun learning that dance,” Isabelle told me when we met again recently at the Four Seasons Hotel in Toronto for her latest film, the controversial Paul Verhoeven -helmed psychological thriller, “Elle.” “I just learned it in a few minutes,” she proudly …

Tom, whom we recently talked to in Los Angeles for his latest Ron Howard-helmed mystery thriller “Inferno,” explained to us the secret of their stable relationship. He said, “Our marriage does not require vast amounts of work and we have been married for 28 years. It will be 29 in April and we dig each other a lot.
