Work goes on for James and Nadine

Reel and real life couple James Reid and Nadine Lustre have asked their management Viva Artists Agency, headed by Veronique del Rosario-Corpus to give them time off from work following the death of “On The Wings Of Love” director Francis Xavier Pasion. That said, when the two have gone through their mourning period, fans can expect them back at work. The two are set to go on a US tour starting May 20 in San Diego, California. The series of concerts will be hosted by Chad Kinis. “To add fun to the shows, I am tasked to create challenges for the couple,” he related. Chad has been working with the two for some time now. “I started hosting their shows since the early days pa, when they came out with their first movie ‘Diary …

Why I still love Madonna

I am a big Madonna fan. I practically withdrew everything I had in the bank to get a good seat at her recent Manila concert and it was worth every cent. I would like to point out, however, some instances before and during the show that kind of made me uncomfortable. Here are 10 of them: 1. The concert producer blasting our mobiles with text messages announcing the gates will open at 5 p.m. You know what? Madonna came out at 10:30 p.m. Most concerts I had gone to usually ended around that time. To think sleeping time for most senior citizens – and some from my generation – is around 11 p.m. 2. Dancers wearing what looked like a nun’s headdress paired with bra tops and panties came out to do some …

New godfathers to indie filmmakers

Creative and brilliant filmmakers lacking funds now have two new godfather figures who support independent cinema: Wilson Tieng, and world-renowned and internationally acclaimed film director Brillante Mendoza. The two have joined forces to put up Sinag Maynila, a film festival that will run from April 21-26 this year. I was able to interview the newest “ninong” to filmmakers, Tieng, who explained, “We bankroll projects of the most creative indie filmmakers so they can develop their materials to a full-length film for public exhibition. For 2016, the festival has been opened to any Filipino independent filmmakers who wish to apply for a film grant.” He added that both he and Mendoza feel, “The exposure of these new filmmakers in other countries will bring pride and honor to Sinag Maynila and the entire Philippines. …

Choosing sides

We caught a nice movie at Gateway in Cubao recently titled “Spotlight.” The screening was sponsored by Sinag Maynila, the new film festival spearheaded by CEO and Founder Wilson Tieng together with internationally-acclaimed film director Brillante Mendoza. We spotted QC Vice Mayor Joy Belmonte, ABS -CBN news anchor Ces Drilon, multi-awarded actress Maria Isabel Lopez at the screening. Before watching the film, I learned it’s about allegations of abuse involving the Catholic Church. It is a true story based on the Pulitzer prize-winning work done by Spotlight, Boston Globe’s investigative team, uncovering years of abuse supposedly committed by priests. The movie earned six nominations at the world’s oldest and most trusted institution in light of such controversy. You know what happened after the credits rolled? I cried. I cried really hard as the movie hit …

Food for the heart

Love is in the air and restaurants are surely going to be packed this Valentine’s weekend. But it’s not going to be a problem for Chef Tristan Encarnacion and Chef JP Anglo, who are both ready for those celebrating. Truth is, both chefs have always been working on the red-letter day for as long as they can remember. “I don’t know about Tristan but I haven’t celebrated Valentine’s Day for a decade,” said JP, who owns a number of restaurants including Cafe Batwan and Sarsa Kitchen. Single but not lonely, JP hopes to find a beautiful fiancée someday. Tristan, on the other hand, is set to marry Kapuso actress Ryza Cenon. The two chefs share a common background. Back in college, they were too happy-go-lucky in school, they almost got expelled. Eventually, they …

Saturday night TV made more exciting

The partnership of Manny Pangilinan’s TV5 and Vic del Rosario’s Viva TV is well on its way to changing Pinoys' TV viewing habits. Starting Feb. 6, TV5 will air two new exciting TV shows namely, “Born to be a Star” and “Tasya Fantasya.” “Born to be a Star” is inspired by the success of the defunct “Star For A Night,” a Viva TV production that paved the way for the careers of recording stars Sarah Geronimo and Mark Bautista. A search for the next singing sensation, “Born to be a Star” sees Mark as a judge along with Rico Blanco, Andrew E and Pops Fernandez. Pops was readying for retirement when Viva called. “I couldn’t say no to Boss Vic. He told me it’s about time I pay it forward to the industry by …

It all started when China enrolled at the Center for Asian Culinary Studies (CACS) where Gino, son of celebrity chef Gene Gonzalez, was one of the chef-instructors. “When I enrolled in CACS, I overheard that Gino was checking out my enrollment form. Apparently, he already had a secret crush on me way before," China said, laughing. China tells Gossip Girl how she opened up to her parents when she got pregnant. Candy Pangilinan: a woman of many hats

English Novelist Jane Austen once wrote, “A man with many hats doesn’t like his haircut.” Gossip Girl has a different take on that. I say, a woman with many hats is remarkable. I say this because my friend, comedienne Candy Pangilinan, is exactly that. Of course, we all know how good she is at what she does. Critics were, in fact, raving about her appearance in the movie “Lumayo Ka Nga Sa Akin.” Some even compared her to Maricel Soriano. Told about it, Candy said, “To be compared with Maricel Soriano is too much for me. Honestly, I don’t feel good enough to be compared to the Diamond Star. But thank you for those who appreciated my work.” Being a comedienne, however, is just one of Candy’s many hats. She is also a …

Albert excited to be a grandpa, not interested in dating

Veteran actor Albert Martinez’ daughter Alyanna, a fashion stylist, is engaged. Her fiancé Roy asked for her hand in marriage at the foot of Mt. Everest. I asked the father of the bride-to-be his thoughts on the matter and he said, “I am already excited to become a grandpa.” He added, “I love my future son-in-law. I have gotten to know him during our Sunday barbecues. We would talk about anything and everything under the sun except his relationship with my daughter.” Although busy with two hit primetime series airing on ABS-CBN, namely “All of Me” and “Ang Probinsiyano,” Albert always makes time to bond with his three kids Alyanna, Alfonso and Alyssa. “I involve myself in my children’s lives. For example, recently I did the cannonball run with my son Alfonso. We tried …

Fortune, fashion and more in 2016

The New Year has arrived and, with it, our interest in knowing what it brings, especially when it comes to fashion or fortune. We are among those who believe it’s always a good thing to be in the know so we can plan ahead. Note, however, that you don’t have to believe or follow what is said here. Alessandra Pineda, managing editor of Cosmo.ph, says there will be a resurgence of ’90s fashion in 2016. This means no make-up, black hair, the bob cut, low-waist jeans and mules (step-ins for the titas and the lolas) will again be en vogue. “In 2016, The Victorian era fashion will also return, which means a lot of high necklines, puffed sleeves and ruffles. 2015 for me was the year of the off-shoulder. I think it’s not …
