When artists share more than their talents

The Oasis of Love is a Catholic Charismatic organization founded by actor Christopher de Leon 23 years ago to help colleagues renew and deepen their relationship with the Lord. Today, it counts among members people from all walks of life. Last Sunday, we put up the Oasis Fiesta, a fund-raising activity. I helped invite stars to grace the event pro-bono. It wasn’t easy. Stars earn a minimum of fifty to a hundred thousand pesos just to attend an event and I was actually a bit apprehensive over the task at hand. How can I make them agree? God is good, however. He gave me big stars in the likes of Jamie Rivera, Joey G, Buboy Garovillo of the Apo Hiking Society, “Asia’s Got Talent” winner Gerphil Flores, Michael Angelo Lobrin, as with upcoming stars …

What makes Miss D busy

I must say that working with award-winning actress Dina Bonnevie is a total delight. We hobnobbed once in the past when I appeared as guest on her now defunct talk show “Ms. D.” But getting to know her further while working on the movie “Magtanggol” made me realize she is far from being mataray and she is, in fact, quite chummy. I asked her why people call her mataray. She said, “I am not afraid to voice out what is wrong in any given situation. When I know and believe I am in the right, I do not hesitate to speak. I believe, that is the only way to fix problems. Of course, some people don’t like the truth so I get branded as mataray.” The Ateneo de Manila graduate confirmed talks about …

Proposals,engagements and breakups

Some showbiz news of late were about your favorite star’s love life. Have you heard about...   The Proposal One of the most intelligent actors I’ve met is Tom Rodriguez. You can talk to him about anything under the sun and if you’re not well-read, well, you might find yourself at a loss. Tom also paints, draws, sculpts, writes, sings, dances and act – yes, he’s like a modern-day Michelangelo trapped in a hunk’s body. But if you’re thinking of snagging him as boyfriend or husband, forget it. Tom revealed to me that he is already planning to propose to actress Carla Abellana. I am sure fans of the duo will be thrilled to hear this, but not Carla’s father, PJ (Abellana). When I told PJ about Tom’s plan, he said, “My mother just died – …

Artists pay it forward

Last Sunday, fans gathered at Pioneer Market to witness some of their favorite stars perform at Labor Akay, a fund-raising event organized by Damay Kamay Foundation meant to benefit artists needing medical help. Some of them were Piolo Pascual, Martin Nievera and Aiza Seguerra. Note these stars did it as labor of love. I was able to interview Martin before he sang and I asked him if he found it uncomfortable performing amid the heat, and he said, “When I found out that Richard Merk and Julio Diaz needed help, I asked my musical director Marvin Querido to join this cause because I really wanted to help. The sun and heat are nothing when you want to help others. ” Piolo brought his son Iñigo and sang two duets with him. “I wanted …

Bayanihan, celeb style

Just a few weeks ago, Julio Diaz was rushed to the hospital for a surgical procedure that proved quite pricey. Thankfully, several celeb friends were ready to help him with the bill. This week, celebrities gathered again to help out singer-actor Richard Merk whose leg is set for amputation. But then, there is also director Siegfried Barros Sanchez, whose toe is set to be amputated following an accident. Members of the Actors Guild have finally decided to create a foundation aimed at lending fellow artists a hand in such emergencies. To help establish the foundation, several celebs have gathered for a fund-raising effort called #LaborAkay. Actress and events organizer Bianca Lapus told us the event will be held on Labor Day, May 1, at Pioneer Street Market on Reliance Street, Mandaluyong City. “The event will start …

A helping hand

Aiza Seguerra and wife Liza Diño-Seguerra have asked fellow celebrities to raise funds for use to bail out several Kidapawan farmers who were arrested during the dispersal of a protest rally. The rally saw the farmers demanding for relief from suffering brought about by prolonged drought that have been ravaging their farmland since last year. Aiza and Liza went to Kidapawan together with their lawyer to personally hand over the donation to the right people. The former said that as of midnight April 15, “all but two of the detained Kidapawan farmers have been released on bail.” The singer was moved by what she heard from the farmers. “Grabe, if you hear their stories, ang sakit sa puso,” she said, relating how some old women were among those jailed. “Mga limang lolas na hindi …

How showbiz rallied to help Julio Diaz

On Sunday, at around 5:50 p.m., Nadia Montenegro posted on our Actors Guild Viber group a message that read: “JULIO DIAZ needs a million pesos for a possible brain procedure to prevent brain aneurysm, as posted by his sister! Oh no! PRAYERS pls, one of the most underrated actors we have.” She reposted the message that Julio’s sister Ana Marie Regaliza-Datuin wrote on Facebook: “Can’t go to sleep thinking of how to get help for my brother, Marnie Regaliza a.k.a. actor Julio Diaz, who needs surgery within the next 24 hours to prevent brain aneurysm. He was rushed to the hospital today after fainting due to what they earlier suspected as a stroke. In the Philippines, they will not perform any medical procedure even if it’s a matter of life and …

Rez’s plea

For the very first time in 20 years, the Kapisanan ng mga Artistang Pilipino (KAPP) meeting was jam-packed. From bit players to big stars, everyone was there to listen and comment on KAPP President Rez Cortez’s presentation on his meeting with the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) and representatives of TV5, ABS-CBN and GMA networks. Following the death of Wenn Deramas and Francis Xavier Pasion, Rez underscored his concern over the working conditions in the ’biz. To enlighten dear readers what a regular working day for an actor is like, I am sharing here my own experience. There are times we would wake up as early as three in the morning so we could get to the set at around 6 a.m. Note sometimes we would wake up even earlier inasmuch as there …

Ogie wears faith on his sleeve

In a recent interview with “Happy Truck Happinas” host Ogie Alcasid, I was delighted, if not surprised, to see that before me was a changed man. If 10 years ago, my conversations with him were all about naughty jokes and rated R stories, there’s no trace of all that this time. A renewed Christian for several years now, I could feel the gifts of the Holy Spirit granted to Ogie. The singer-songwriter’s words are full of wisdom and humility as we talked about a myriad of things. How God can transform people! Ogie even quoted a Bible verse to me: “Bearing fruit is actually the promise of our Savior as He is the Vine. John 15:5 says ‘I am the vine; you are the branches, If you remain in me and I …

In Sweet’s shoes

Following Pope Francis’ suggestion to do simple acts of charity this Lent, comedian John ‘Sweet’ Lapus has conceptualized another wonderful project to benefit the less fortunate. Sweet’s charity projects are always a success. Testament to this is the auction he organized last Feb. 14 at SM Bicutan. The “Tasya Fantasya” and “Doble Kara” star tapped his good friends in show business like Kris Aquino, Sam Milby, Mylene Dizon, and Julia Montes to donate pre-loved clothes for the event, the proceeds of which he donated to the SM Foundation. To follow-up on that success, Sweet has partnered with Bandpro Events for his new effort: It’s All About Shoes, which is ongoing at SM Bicutan until March 31. “I invited my local celebrity friends again to participate in the event. There will be silent auctions for …
