Short film ‘The Rapist’ precedes ‘Mulat’

When Maria Diane Ventura’s “Mulat” opens in local cinemas on Nov. 2, moviegoers are in for a treat: Her short-film “The Rapist” will play before the feature film. Bb. Pilipinas queens on their journey to the crown

Three 2016 Bb. Pilipinas title holders were feted recently at the Monet Ballroom of Novotel Manila before they went on their respective journeys to the crown. They are Kylie Verzosa, Bb. Pilipinas International; Jennifer Hammond, Bb. Pilipinas Intercontinental; and Nicole Cordoves, Bb. Pilipinas Grand International. Jennifer represented the Philippines in the Miss Intercontinental beauty pageant in Colombo, Sri Lanka last Oct. 16, while Nicole will carry the Philippine flag to the Miss Grand International pageant in Las Vegas, USA on Oct. 25. Back in Manila after staying in Malaysia for many years, Spanish-Filipino singer Rafael Centenera released recently his music video for “Ikaw Ang Susi.” It is composed by Russtar Wilma Balwit, a Filipina songwriter residing in Hong Kong. The music video precedes that for “Sa Kanya Ba?” penned by Vehnee Saturno. Rafael plans to come up with a CD-Lite featuring about six songs with corresponding minus ones. He is looking for four more songs. “I really love singing. I know there is stiff competition these days, what with the abundance of young and talented singers, but I’m doing it for the love of it. Viva Films’ latest rom-com opens

“Bakit Lahat Ng Gwapo May Boyfriend?” is directed by multi-awarded Jun Lana, and it stars three of the country’s hottest stars namely Anne Curtis, Dennis Trillo and Paolo Ballesteros. In the funny tale of love and romance, Anne plays Kylie, a girl seemingly cursed for having failed romances with her gay boyfriends. Friends aptly refer to her as the “Cover Girl” of closeted gays. John Fernandez Raspado of Baguio City bested 35 other candidates to win the Mr. Gay World Philippines 2016 title. He also won eight other awards, including Best in National Costume, Mr. Popularity and Mr. Photogenic. The other winners were Bench Ortiz from Pangasinan, 1st runner-up and Best in Swimwear; and Khalil Vera Cruz from Zamboanga del Sur, 2nd runner-up and Best in Formal Wear. Ms. Ma. Teresa Cancio of Goodwill Bookstore, one of the oldest bookstores in the country (it turns 78 this year), has steered her family’s publishing business towards many successes. Aside from Goodwill Bookstore, their other companies include EDCA Publishing and Distributing Corporation and Katha Publishing Company, which have been part of the Filipinos’ learning and discovery through books and other publications.
