Voter registration for brgy, SK polls to resume Nov. 7

The registration of voters for the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections will resume on November 7, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) said.

The Comelec en banc promulgated on Tuesday, October 25 Resolution No. 10166 on the resumption of the continuing voter registration.

Comelec chairman Andres Bautista posted a picture of the resolution in his Twitter account.

Based on the resolution, the registration period for the 2017 barangay and SK polls will take place from November 7, 2016 to April 29, 2017, including Saturdays and holidays, except on December 24 and 25, 2016 and April 13 and 14, 2017.

The poll body was supposed to resume the voter registration last October 3 but had to wait for President Rodrigo Duterte to enact the postponement of the October 31 barangay and SK polls to 2017, which Malacañang on October 18 announced the president had signed.

“We can only resume registration after the law postponing the barangay and SK elections has been passed,” Comelec Spokesperson James Jimenez said at that time.

Sec. 8 of Republic Act 8189 or the Voters’ Registration Act of 1996, on the System of Continuing Registration of Voters states that, “the personal filing of application of registration of voters shall be conducted daily in the office of the Election Officer during regular office hours.

No registration shall, however, be conducted during the period starting 120 days before a regular election and 90 days before a special election.

The Comelec is expecting 2 million additional voters for the SK election and 3 million for the barangay election.
