No less than 300 Star Magic artists and ABS-CBN executives gathered at the prestigious annual Star Magic Ball in Makati Shangri-la Hotel last Oct. 22.

Among them were top stars Piolo Pascual, John Lloyd Cruz, Jericho Rosales, Bea Alonzo, Xian Lim, Kim Chiu, Sam Milby, Gerald Anderson, Maja Salvador, Zanjoe Marudo, Jodi Sta. Maria; and the hottest love teams of Daniel Matsunaga and Erich Gonzales; Liza Soberano and Enrique Gil; Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla. They offered a toast for Kapamilya executives Gabby Lopez and Freddie M. Garcia.

CJ Navato, Kristel Fulgar, Bailey May, Ylona Garcia, Darren Espanto, and Alexa Ilacad performed a Carole King medley for Gabby Lopez; while Martin Nievera, Richard Poon, KZ Tandingan and Jona serenaded Freddie Garcia with a Tony Bennett medley.

Jason Dy performed “I Won’t Give Up” as the stars did the traditional cotillon composed of Tommy Esguerra and Miho Nishida, Sofia Andres and Diego Loyzaga, McCoy de Leon and Elisse Joson, Sue Ramirez and Ronnie Alonte, Grae Fernandez and Kira Balinger, Nash Aguas and Alexa Ilacad.

The stars were dressed to the nines in their ball gowns and suits. Liza Soberano looked stunning in a blue Michael Cinco creation. Little wonder she bagged the Best Dressed award. Zanjoe Marudo, who wore a Lanvin, received similar recognition.

Many stars went solo to the ball, among them Piolo, Zanjoe, Maja, Matteo Guidicelli, Shaina Magdayao, Angelica Panganiban, Jodi Sta. Maria, Alex Gonzaga, Ian Veneracion, Ejay Falcon, and Enchong Dee, among others.

“Madami tayong namiss na makita, gustong makasama. So I guess it’s just fair to go stag or solo. It has been a couple of years na mag-isa lang tayo lagi. Nasanay na din,” Piolo told the press at the red carpet.

Many of the stars looked forward to the event to catch up with their colleagues.

“Masaya na makasama mo yung mga kapamilya mo sa Star Magic pati yung mga taga-ABS-CBN,” said Angelica, who went dateless. Her ex-boyfriend John Lloyd Cruz walked the red carpet with ABS-CBN executive and “Ang Babaeng Humayo” costar Charo Santos-Concio.

Among those who came as pairs were Liza and Enrique Gil; Kathryn and Daniel; Kim and Xian; Bailey and Ylona; Elise and Mccoy De Leon; Sharlene San Pedro and Jairus Aquino; Nash Aguas and Alexa Ilacad; Arron Villaflor and Dawn Chang.

“Masaya lang lahat. Walang trabaho. This is also the time to catch up with old friends and make new friends,” Kathryn said.

The real-life couples present that night were Jericho and Kim Jones; Erich and Daniel; Pokwang and Lee Brian; Richard Poon and Maricar Reyes; Billy Crawford and Coleen Garcia; Jolina Magdangal and Mark Escueta; Patrick Garcia and Nikka Martinez; and Jason Abalos and Vickie Rushton.

Sam Milby came with girlfriend Mari Jasmin for the first time at the event.

“I gave her some ideas about the program, like there would be performances and tributes. I look at this like a prom,” Sam told the press.

Jovit Baldovino and partner Shara Chavez also came, squashing the breakup rumors.

“Nagulat po kami. Busy lang kami. Busy siya sa negosyo niya, ako naman busy din sa industry. So siguro nawawalan lang kami ng time sa ganyan pero we’re still together,” Jovit said.

Those who are reported to be dating also came in attendance. Former couple Gerald Anderson and Bea Alonzo, who used to go before with their respective partners then, told the press at the red carpet that they are currently dating. Jessy Mendiola and Luis Manzano, who are rumored to be a couple already, also attended the ball together for the first time.

New Kapamilya stars, including Elmo Magalano, Ritz Azul, and Arci Munoz, also graced the ball.

“Madaming tao na first time ko kamg makikita. I’m excited na makita yung prestige ng event na jto. I’m so glad to be part of ABS-CBN. Ang ganda ng plans at ng path,” Ritz said.

Elmo, who just came from a recent breakup with Janine Gutierrez, attended with his “Born for You” leading lady Janella Salvador.

“I don’t think this is the right time to do it (talk about the breakup). I just really wanna have fun This is my first time to attend the Star Magic Ball and I can’t wait to see what’s going to happen inside,” Elmo said. He denied courting Janella.

Special award were given out that night. The Male and Female Stars of the Night went to Charo Santos and Gabby Lopez. Rumored couple Sofia Andres and Diego Loyzaga took the Couple of the Night award. Jericho Rosales, one of the pioneers of Star Magic, received the Star Magic Icon award.

Some of the stars and VIPs also pledged donations for the victims of typhoon Lawin.
