Filipino, Korean talents shine at cultural exchange festival

Filipino and Korean acts came together again for the 2016 Philippine-Korea Cultural Exchange Festival held a few days ago at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP).

The festival, which ran for five hours, included a concert and a talent competition.

The Serotonin Performing Arts Company opened the “Concert For Peace” followed by a medley of Korean folk songs performed by the Seoul National University (SNU) Korean Music Ensemble.

The ABS-CBN Philharmonic Orchestra and the Metro Manila Concert Orchestra joined the SNU Korean Music Ensemble onstage playing the Korean classic “Arirang,” under the baton of Gerard Salonga.

Soprano Park Min Jung performed “Beautiful Korea,” while the ABS-CBN Philharmonic Orchestra and the Metro Manila Concert Orchestra played the Filipino folk song “Salidumay.”

Bass baritone Lee Sung Min serenaded the audience with “Nin Piu Andrai” from Le Nozze di Figaro. He joined Lee in a duet of “One Fine day In October” to finish the first part of the concert.

The ABS-CBN Philharmonic Orchestra and the Metro Manila Concert Orchestra opened the second part with Mozart’s overture from “The Magic Flute.”

It ended with a 330-member chorus, composed of Filipino and Korean participants, joining soprano Rachelle Gerodias-Park, alto Krissan Manikan Tan, tenor Arthur Espiritu and baritone Park Byeong In, in performing Beethoven’s “Ode To Joy.”

The K-pop competition composed the second part of the festival.

Derrick Monasterio, singer Yohan, and idol group, The King, enthralled the crowd with their numbers. Tagalog and Korean Speech Contest finalists also kept the audience engaged and entertained.

Cover group PHP won the grand prize with their fiery dance remix number while Anna Jean Fernandez (“You Are My Everything” by Gummy), cover group F.S.E. (dance remix), and Sofia Therise Capili (“Arirang”) bagged the first, second, and third prizes, respectively.

The festival was organized by the Embassy of Republic of Korea, Korean Cultural Center (KCC) together with United Korean Community Association in the Philippines (UKCA),NCCA, CCP and ABS-CBN Orchestra.
