Suspect in killing of AdU student found dead in jail

The second suspect in the gruesome killing of an 18-year-old Adamson University architecture student was found dead inside his detention cell in Taguig City, the Southern Police District (SPD) reported yesterday.

Reynold Clave, 29, tagged in Nick Russel Oniot’s death last October 14, was found unconscious around 10:45 p.m. inside his cell at the Taguig City Police headquarters by his co-inmates, according to SPD director Chief Supt. Tomas Apolinario Jr.

“Ang initial report na aking natanggap ay due to medical complexities, so baka na heatstroke or baka na heart attack sa loob ng kulungan,” (The initial report we got was he died due to medical complexities, he may have suffered a heart attack or heat stroke),” Apolinario told the Manila Bulletin.

“Madalas na kasi may mga insidente na ganyan doon eh dahil sa congestion, nagkakasiksikan sila sa loob kaya di maiwasan na kapag may medical condition ay ganoon ang mangyari (Incidents like this happen often due to congestion, hence when you have a medical condition, this things can happen),” Apolinario said.

The SPD chief said that the cell where Clave was locked up houses 80 to 90 inmates, far from its ideal capacity of 30 to 40.

Clave was rushed to Taguig-Pateros District Hospital where he was declared dead on arrival, Apolinario said.

Clave, a suspected drug dealer operating in Barangay Central Signal, was the one who tried to snatch the bag of Oniot while the latter was walking along Martinez Street – two blocks away from his residence.

The other suspect, Marvin Bernardo, 36, who stabbed Oniot 18 times, was killed by the police after  reportedly trying to grab the service firearm of a police officer while he was being transported to the city jail.

The family and close friends of Nick Russel hope that his soul can finally be at peace.
