Davao City — Mayor Sara Z. Duterte has asked the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and the Davao City Water District (DCWD) here for a list of projects and updates on their progress as these have already caused severe traffic congestion in major roads in the city.

In an interview with reporters at the Felix Apolinario Naval Camp in Panacan, Duterte said the DPWH and DCWD have “asked for the understanding of Dabawenyos” for the inconvenience that the unfinished projects has caused.

Duterte told these agencies to submit a list of projects, target deadlines, including the names of the contractors working on the project.

She noted that some of the contractors have admitted to being delayed in their completion targets.

According to Duterte, the DCWD has asked for an extension in 2017 from an original end-of-year deadline.

“Instead of 2016 they’re pushing 2017 for their public works,” she said.

The DPWH, meanwhile, told the city government that the continuous rains have hampered construction efforts.

And to help ease the traffic woes, the DPWH and DCWD have asked the local government’s help to re-route traffic in the areas where the infrastructure projects are being undertaken.

But Duterte said rerouting traffic was out of the question at this point because this would only cause more harm than good.

The DCWD and DPWH have also suggested working exclusively after peak hours, particularly at night time.

“Dili ingon ana kadali mag rerouting kay magtraffic na pud kung mag reroute ta especially kung dili aware ang mga tao nga nay ingon an (It’s not that easy to reroute traffic, and this is still going to cause inconveniences to motorists, especially those who are not aware of any arrangements),” Duterte said.

“So pagkakaron, sa gabii lang sila magtrabaho (Right now, they’re working at night),” she added.

Last week, Mayor Duterte asked the Department of Transportation to include the city in the proposed plans to give President Duterte emergency powers to solve the traffic problem nationwide.
