From dancing to acting, hosting and even cooking, TV and online personality Gee Canlas continues to prove her mettle as a Jane-of-all-trades.

The Communication Arts graduate from Miriam College started as dancer for the hip-hop group Philippine All-Stars. She was also previously known as Speedy Gee because of her ability to speak really fast.

Gee has hosted “Music Uplate” and “Pilipinas Win na Win,” but is now more known as comedian following stints on “Loko Mo Ko High,” “I Laugh Sabado” and “A1 Ko Sa’yo.”

“I feel na I can never be just one thing,” she said in an interview. “I like being productive. Gusto ko na parating natututo.”

The multi-hyphenate star idolizes Emma Stone, who can be both sexy and funny; as well as Tina Fey, whom Gee finds “charming.”

Cool on competition

Gee is not out to compete with other comedy actresses, especially those who are under the same management (Veda Artist Management) as hers.

“I’d rather kasi na we help each other keep our respective crowns,” she said.

Many actresses have already posed for men’s magazine but that is not Gee’s priority for now.

“Parang hindi pa siya sumasagi sa isip ko kasi for the longest time, I’ve only just been the funny girl, never the sexy girl. Pero now dahil nagta-try ako ng mga stuff outside my comfort zone, if it comes I will consider it a challenge.”

Up for more projects

Her most recent movies were “Resureksyon” and “The Trial.” She also acted in “Sana Dati” and “Melodrama Negra.” Gee would like to do more indie movies.

“Kasi nacu-cultivate ‘yung artistic side ko talaga. Hindi siya mainstream, kundi out of the box. Nai-enjoy ko talaga (kapag ganun),” she said.

Gee has her own online show called “Gee TV,” where she writes and acts in humorous sketches about everyday life and relationships. They shoot once a month and release videos weekly.

She also fills stomachs with delicious desserts from The Molten Kitchen, where she and her partner offer cookiezza, a recipe she created when she was 12 years old.

On men

Gee believes humor is attractive to men.

“May tinatawag na ‘massaging the brain.’ From my experience, natutuwa sila sa babaeng secure sa sarili nila, in a sense na pwedeng maging goofy or walang poise. They find it adorable na a woman can laugh at herself,” she said.

The actress, who is currently single, wants a man who is also funny. But she is is no rush to enter into a relationship, no, sir.

“Focus muna on work,” she said. “Secure ako in God’s plans for me na meron talaga at darating siya in God’s time. But in the mean time, buong week, trabaho!”
