Authorities said that HIV-AIDS incidents have increased in the province every year with the total 1,589 cases that were recorded in the area since 1984.

The Department of Health (DOH) report ranked Cavite province as No. 1 in terms of HIV/AIDS case number in Region IV-A or the Calabarzon (Cavite-Laguna-Batangas-Rizal-Quezon) area and No. 2 in the country after National Capital Region.

PHO-HIV-AIDS Program Coordinator Haydelisa Maderazo, citing a report from the DOH-National Epidemiology Center, said that the 243 cases were recorded in the province from January to June this year.

Of the 243 cases, 222 are people living with HIV and 21 AIDS. Maderazo reported that 233 of those afflicted were males and 10 were females and that many of them are with ages ranging from 16 to 24 years old.

Health authorities said that HIV causes AIDS. HIV can be transmitted through sex, blood transfusion, contaminated hypodermic needles, childbirth, and breastfeeding.
