Tabuena joins world-class field in $7M CIMB Classic

Miguel Tabuena gets another chance to test his skills at the highest level when he joins some of the world’s golf stars in the CIMB Classic beginning which starts today in Kuala Lumpur.

Tabuena, the country’s number one golfer, earned a spot in the prestigious event sanctioned by the Asian Tour and the US PGA Tour by placing fifth in the Asian Tour Order of Merit where the top 10 got automatic invitations.

The $7 million (R339.5 million) event is the richest in Asia and is being held at the TPC Kuala Lumpur for the sixth time. It will be the first time a Filipino will be teeing off in this event. He joins five other Asian Tour standouts making their first appearance in the tournament with over $1 million going to the winner.

With two runner-up results this year including three other top-10s, Tabuena is playing some of his best golf ahead of the CIMB Classic. It will be his first appearance in the event and third PGA TOUR start after earning an invite to the Sony Open earlier this year and in 2012. He also played the US Open but missed the cut.

“This is my first time playing in the CIMB Classic. It has always been one of my goals since I joined the Asian Tour in 2011. It has been the best season for me this year. I guess it shows that the hard work is paying off. It is really a dream come true to be playing here,” said Tabuena.

After turning 22 last week, Tabuena is looking forward to an important two-week stretch starting with the CIMB Classic and the World Golf Championship (WGC) tournament in China next week as he aims to rack up enough FedExCup points to qualify for the Tour finals.
