F2 Logistics battles Rio in Women’s Club opener

PSL-F2 Logistics Manila hopes to make a good impression against some of the world’s best clubs when the FIVB Women’s Club World Championship reels off today at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Composed of seven locals and seven foreigners, PSL-F2 Logistics opens its campaign against Rexona-Sesc Rio at 7:30 p.m. to conclude a four-game bill of the competition that is expected to give local fans a glimpse of high-quality volleyball action.

The seven locals comprising the squad are from teams seeing action in the Philippine Superliga in team captain Rachel Anne Daquis, Mika Reyes, Kim Fajardo, Jovelyn Gonzaga, Ces Molina, Jen Reyes and Jaja Santiago.

They made the roster following months of selection and will team up with imports Tichaya Boonlert, Yuri Fukuda, Yevgeniya Nyukhalova, Ekaterina Krivets, Lynda Morales, Stephanie Niemer and Lindsay Stalzer.

“This in NBA of volleyball,” said PSL-F2 Logistics Serbian Coach Moro Branislav.

“My team is ready. We have high respect for the competing teams, but this is our dream: To play against teams of this strong caliber,” added Branislav, whose team only had 25 days to prepare for this tournament.

The team will be up against a Rexona team, the South American champion from Brazil, led by Anne Bujis, Carol, Gabi and Juicely.

The curtain raiser at 10 a.m. pits Vakifbank Istanbul and Hisamitsu Springs, followed by reigning Swiss Cup champion Volero Zurich opposite 2015 Asian champion Bangkok Glass of Thailand at 1 p.m.

Reigning European winner Pomi Casalmaggiore collides with defending champion Eczacibasi Vitra in the third match at 4:30 p.m.

The eight teams are divided into two pools for the preliminaries where the top two squads from each bracket will advance to the semifinal.

Among the superstars seeing action here are Asian heavyweights Pleumjit Thinkaow, Thi Ngoc Hoa Nguyen, Wilavan Apinyapong; Olympians Miyu Nagaoka and Yuki Ishii, as well as Risa Shinnabe and Risa Ishibashi.
