Bishop says limit, not ban firecrackers

Malolos Bishop Jose Oliveros is opposed to the idea of implementing a total firecracker ban in the country.

In an interview, the prelate said while what happened recently in Bocaue was “unfortunate”, he is still not in favor of the idea of a total ban as this could affect the source of livelihood of some people.

“What happened in Bocaue yesterday was an unfortunate incident,” said Oliveros. “(but) Many people in Bocaue and other parts of the Philippines would lose their source of income and way of living.”

The Malolos prelate said another reason why he is against a total firecracker ban is that it has already become part of the Filipino culture.

“I am not in favor of a total ban because fireworks are already part of our culture and custom,” Oliveros said.

It has been the practice of some Filipinos to welcome the New Year with fireworks.  Instead of a total firecracker ban, Bishop Oliveros called for stricter security measures.

“What is needed are stricter safety measures and for the government to ensure its implementation,” he said.
