All long for unity. All long for peace. Even in dirty politics, where the winner takes it all, it is, after all and ultimately, an honorable game in the name of country and countrymen, especially in the case of Senator Chiz Escudero, who was the first and the most gracious to concede to his rival, now Vice President Leni Robredo, at last May’s elections, the most vicious and divisive, with the highest turnout of voters at 84 percent, to date.

At Sen. Escudero’s birthday dinner, a simple Mongolian barbecue at the Woodside Clubhouse at the Ayala Woodside townhouse complex on Doña Hemady in New Manila, Quezon City, the Vice President was clearly, though unofficially, the guest of honor. The birthday celebrant took her around from table to table, introducing her with candor to every friend or member of the family who occupied most tables and even grabbing his guests’ smartphones to take a photo of them with Robredo.

All’s well that ends well, indeed. Also invited were the other vice presidentiables Senators Alan Peter Cayetano and Antonio Trillanes.

Escudero’s Mongolian barbecue dinner, despite the presence of the vice president and other political figures like Senate President Koko Pimentel, Senators Loren Legarda, Dick Gordon, Miguel Zubiri, Franklin Drilon, Win Gatchalian, and Joel Villanueva, and Quezon City Mayor Herbert Bautista, was an affair among friends and family. Most treasured was the presence of his mother Rep. Eveline Guevarra-Escudero, his brother Philip Escudero, and sister Dette Escudero-Quirante.

Love Marie “Heart” Ongpauco Escudero was closely at her husband’s side, so was her side of their family, including her parents, Reynaldo and Cecilia Ongpauco, from whom Chiz and his wife had previously been estranged since before their wedding in 2015, and her sister Camille Ongpauco and her new husband Martin Rosario.

“I will always be proud of all that you are!” said Heart to Chiz.” May you always be blessed for all your generosity and the good deeds you share with everyone!”
