House bill filed to increase ZCMC’s bed capacity to 800

Zamboanga City — 1st District Rep. Celso Lobregat is seeking an increase in the bed capacity of  the Zamboanga City Medical Center (ZCMC) from 500 to 800  to better serve the medical needs of  residents of the city as well as the provinces of Basilan, Sulu and Tawi-Tawi.

Lobregat said that the  ZCMC also serves as the principal hospital  of the Zamboanga peninsula or Region 9 and  for the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM).

According to Lobregat, House Bill No 3750 which he filed  at the Lower House   seeks to increase the bed capacity of the ZCMC by 300.

Dr. Romeo Ong of ZCMC,  together with the unit heads recently briefed Lobregat on the present status  and condition of the  ZCMC  including the present  needs of the hospital and  other pressing concerns.

During the meeting, the hospital officials informed Lobregat  that the present 500 bed capacity of the hospital is not enough to serve the medical needs of  the city, Region 9 and from the three provinces  of  ARMM.

Lobregat noted that as of June 2016, the average bed occupancy rate of  ZCMC is 120.12%, thus there is a need to increase the bed capacity in order to meet the rapid increase of population of the city and the region as a whole.

Lobregat is optimistic that increasing the bed capacity of ZCMC will greatly improve the delivery of health services and make it more accessible to the people.

ZCMC started as a General Hospital on September 1, 1918.

On March 24, 1992, through Republic Act No. 7272, the hospital was converted to Zamboanga City Medical Center, upgrading it from 200 to 250 bed capacity hospital.
