Death is not the answer – CBCP

On the occasion of the observance of the World Day Against Death Penalty, the Catholic Church appealed anew to those pushing for the revival of death penalty not to resort to quick fix solution to the problem of criminality in the country.

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines Épiscopal Commission on Prison Pastoral Care stressed that “death is never the answer.”

“We appeal to the President and our lawmakers not to resort to a quick fix solution to the problem of criminality and stop gving us false hope that we will be safe and secure by putting people to death,” Rodolfo Diamante, executive secretary of the CBCP-ECPPC, said in a statement.

“Death penalty is the easy way out of addressing the complex and pervasive problems of criminality. It is no more the answer for violent crime than abortion is the answer for unplanned pregnancies,” he added.

The CBCP-ECPPC official believes astute politicians will carry the cause death for the convicted not because they believe in it as an appropriate national policy, but because it is a “popular cause.”

But the CBCP reminded politicians that the popular is not necessarily correct.

“As Christians, we are called to uphold and proclaim a set of moral principles and social teachings at the heart of which is the knowledge that the human person is central, the clearest reflection of God among us. Human life is inherently precious and those who commit crimes do not give up their human dignity,” said Diamante.

The Coalition Against Death Penalty also issued the same call to President Duterte and lawmakers.

“We implore our President, and our lawmakers to heed the call of His Holiness Pope Francis to work for the reform of the justice system and abandon death penalty,” the group said.
