2 ASG bandits arrested near Zambo Hermosa Festival site

Zamboanga City – An Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) bandit with a P5.3 million bounty on his head, together with a cohort  were arrested in this city by police authorities Friday night, few  meters from  the site of the Zamboanga Hermosa Festival.

Police Regional Office for Zamboanga Peninsula (PRO-9) Director Chief Supt. Billy Beltran  identified the  arrested ASG members as Abdul-latip Talanghati y Suwaling, also known as Latip Sihata and  Tatang, 64, and Albashrie Talanghati y Sata alias  Tagalog and  Abu Tarik.

Both are residents of Luuk, Tongkil, Sulu.

Abdul-latip Talanghati has a P5.3 million bounty on his head and has been linked to the Sipadan kidnapping  in 2000 in Sabah, Malaysia.

Beltran said police manhunt operations were carried out by combined elements of the Regional Intelligence Division- Regional Special Operation Group 9 led by Supt  Ferjen Torred, Regional Intel Division and Zamboanga City Police Office.

The two were arrested at around  9:30p.m.  in Barangay Sta. Barbara, according to Beltran.

He said that the arresting team had in its possession a Warrant of Arrest docketed in Criminal Case no. (505-4) 122473-h for kidnapping and serious illegal detention with ransom defined and penalized under Article 267 of the Revise Penal Code.

Confiscated from the possession and control of two ASG members were suspected explosives, a detonating cord and time fuse.

The suspected explosives were processed by the Explosive Ordnance Division. The arrested ASG bandits are temporarily detained at the Zamboanga City Police Station.

According to Beltran, the local police obtained information that the two ASG bandits were planning to conduct terror activities in Zamboanga City.

Beltran urged the police and other operating units here to be vigilant to prevent bandits from carrying out their nefarious plans.

Meantime, Zamboanga City 1st District Rep Celso Lobregat has urged the general public to extend their full cooperation in the present security efforts and initiatives being implemented by law enforcement authorities.

Lobregat said the stepped up security measures are being undertaken to prevent any form of disturbance during this festive and peaceful celebration honoring Nuestra Señora La Virgen del Pilar.
