All roads lead to Agrilink trade show

All roads, so to speak, lead to the World Trade Center in Pasay City as agricultural enthusiasts all over the country flock to the three-day Agrilink trade show which starts today and will end on Saturday.

Evelyn Laviña, Department Agriculture undersecretary for agribusiness and high-value crops, will lead the government officials in the ceremonial opening of the event at 9 a.m. today together with personalities involved in agricultural pursuits like Sen. Cynthia Villar, government agency directors, foreign ambassadors and others.

  • SEMINAR ON KOREAN AGRICULTURAL MACHINES – The Korea Agricultural Machinery Industry Cooperative (KAMICO) will conduct today (October 6) a seminar on agricultural machinery produced by Korean manufacturers at the Agrilink trade show at the World Trade Center in Pasay City. KAMICO manufactures a wide range of agricultural machinery like tractors, rice planters and harvesters, rice mills, dryers, levee makers, augers and many others.   • NOVEL TECHNIQUE – Visitors to the Agrilink trade show will see different innovative ways of growing crops like the cucumber in photo that is growing in containers with simple trellis. This can be adopted in urban areas to produce healthy crops for home consumption. Different kinds of vegetables and even fruit trees can be grown in containers in the urban setting where there is usually limited space for gardening.

Adelle Ashitaba is now commercially made into tea and will launch at the trade show its Ashitaba powder. The Food and Drug Administration has recently issued a certificate of product registration of Ashitaba powder as food supplement. The powder can be used to fortify food products like noodles, bakery products and many others. It can be added to soups and rice being cooked. These include superior varieties of durian like Puyat and Monthong, R-5 and Super Red rambutan, Vietnam and Thai  pomelo varieties, seedless atis, seedless guava, Berba, mangosteen, Duku and Longkong lanzones, sweet kamias, grafted cashew,  different imported makopa varieties, sweet balimbing, BR 25 cacao, imported mango varieties like R2E2 or Peach mango, Golden Queen, Golden Phoenix and many others.

Laviña is scheduled to address issues of sustainability, food security, global competitiveness and agricultural resiliency, according to Antonio V. Roces, president of the Foundation for Resources Linkage and Development (FRLD), the company responsible for staging the annual event which is considered the mostly attended event of its kind in the Philippines.

More than 300 exhibitors consisting of SMEs as well as big corporations from the Philippines and abroad are showcasing their products, improved technologies and services in their exhibit booths as well as in seminars that they are conducting.

One of the big foreign exhibitors is the Korean Agricultural Machinery Industry Cooperative (KAMICO) which is represented in the Philippines by Philip Kim, president of FITcorea Trading Philippines. The Korean group has one of the biggest pavilions in the trade show. The co-op offers a wide range of agricultural machinery that include Branson tractors, seeders, transplanters,  combine harvesters, compact rice mills, multi-crop dryers, solar insect traps and many others.

On opening day, special events will follow the ceremonial ribbon cutting. These will include cooking demos by Nogrocoma, the group of national onion growers. Univet Nutrition and Animal Healthcare Company (UNAHCO) will launch its new campaign for Pirgolac. Aside from the free seminar to be conducted by KAMICO, there will be lectures conducted by Seven-L Agrifood, Postharvest Horticulture and Research Center of UP Los Baños, Negros Island Region Group, Herbs and Spices, Allied Botanical Corporation and National Federation of Hog Farmers.

On the second day, October 7,  Zoomany/Paradizoo will stage a live animal show while seminars include those of Ultima Entrepinoy Forum Center, Vim Vertex, Trigonal Agritech, Prime Agritech, Macondray, South African Embassy which will discuss opportunities in their fresh fruit sector. OPTA, on the other hand, will discuss how to maximize profit by implementing good marketing strategies for organic products.

On October 8, from 10 to 12 noon, the AANI Agri-Kapihan will be held at the lobby of the World Trade Center. Among the presenters will be  Adelle Ashitaba Tea which is increasingly becoming popular as a food supplement with a lot of health benefits. Other timely topics will be discussed by resource persons at the Agri-Kapihan.

Other companies will also conduct their own seminars on the last day. These include Tateh Aqua, Buhler Group, Feed Pro, Philippine Fisheries Association and UNAHCO Sarimanok.

The exhibit booths are located in both the indoor and outdoor areas. Most of the outdoor exhibits consist of livestock like sheep, goat and pigs; poultry like imported layers, free-range breeds, native chickens and exotic birds; exotic fruit trees and high-value vegetables and other crops; farm machinery and equipment and many others.
