Voters’ registration centers in barangays

Qualified voters will have an easier time registering for forthcoming elections after the Commission on Election (Comelec) announced it will start putting up satellite registration centers in every barangay.

The poll body’s latest initiative is aimed at raising the number of participants in the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections, which is expected to be held next year.

“We will be setting up satellite registration centers in every barangay to encourage more people to participate in the elections,” Comelec spokesman James Jimenez said in a statement.

The registration centers will be placed in barangay halls, public or private schools, commercial establishments, detention centers, areas with indigenous communities, and other public places within the district, city, or municipality.

It will be manned by Comelec’s city/municipal Offices of the Election Officer (OEOs).

Jimenez pointed out the satellite registration could be held multiple times per barangay upon the discretion of the OECs.

Comelec’s announcement comes two weeks before the anticipated resumption of the voter’s registration for the barangay and SK elections from Oct. 3, 2016 to April 29, 2017.
