Tanker collides with navy ship in Zamboanga

Zamboanga City – A tanker with Liberian, M/T Tasco, collided with the support vessel of the Philippine Navy, Monday night, while anchored near the Naval Station Romulo Espaldon in this city.

Naval Forces Western Mindanao Rear Admiral Jorge Amba identified the Navy ship as BRP Tarlac (LD 601).

Amba said the incident happened at around 7:47p.m., Monday, while BRP Tarlac was anchored 1,000 yards south of the Ensign Majini Pier at the Espaldon Naval Station.

The navy ship had just arrived in this city from  Jolo, Sulu where it delivered  the necessary support to  soldiers engaged in focused military operations against the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG).

According to Amba the MT Tasco was commanded by  Captain Dominador Tanguas Jr., and was carrying 21 Filipinos and the ship’s Ukranian crew. It was headed to Bintulo, Malaysia when the incident took place.

No one was hurt as a result of the incident but the Navy vessel sustained minor damaged in her right forward bulwark and side ramp, according to Amba.

There was no immediate report on  what the  tanker was carrying to Bintulo, Malaysia.

Investigation by the Philippine Coast Guard Station was ongoing to determine the circumstances of the collision, Amba added.
