DOLE meeting labor group on nat’l wage hike, ‘endo’

The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) is set to meet with members of one of the country’s biggest labor coalitions this week to discuss its proposal for a nationalized wage hike and the bid to end workers’ contractualization – the so-called “endo” or end of contract system.

Nagkaisa, a coalition of 47 labor federations, confirmed yesterday that it has been invited by DOLE’s Bureau of Labor Relations (BLR) for a consultation session tomorrow and on Friday regarding the agency’s recent major shifts in its policies.

BLR’s consultative meeting with Nagkaisa is happening simultaneously with the consultation being conducted by DOLE’s regional offices on the same matter.

“We will attend (the meeting) to state our positions,” Nagkaisa representative and Associated Labor Unions-Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (ALU-TUCP) spokesperson Alan Tanjusay said in a text message.

Over the weekend, Nagkaisa declared its support for DOLE’s recent pronouncement to consider supporting pending legislation in Congress, which will bring back the nationalized wage setting scheme. The group also lauded DOLE’s target of eliminating illegal contractual employment by next year.

However, Partido Manggagawa (PM) spokesperson and another Nagkaisa representative, Wilson Fortaleza, said they will continue to remain critical of DOLE until it finally reveals its concrete measure to achieve the aforementioned targets.
