DA Assistant Secretary for Livestock Enrico Garzon Jr., who visited the province over the weekend, said Negros Occidental is being considered because of the strong implementation of its various livestock development programs.

He added that the agency plans to assist Negros Occidental in developing a halal slaughterhouse for commodities such as sheep, cattle and goat.

Halal food refers to food permitted under the Shariah (Islamic) Law.

Garzon said halal commodities have to pass certain guidelines in accordance with Muslim laws, from production to slaughtering.

During his visit to Negros Occidental, Garzon toured the Provincial Livestock Breeding Center and Dairy Farm in Barangay La Granja, La Carlota City, and the Negros First Ranch in Barangay Sta. Rosa, Murcia town.

He said that his team saw a certain area within the Negros First Ranch available and ideal for halal production.

Garzon added that he informed Dr. Renante Decena, head of the Provincial Veterinary Office, that he will request the National Meat Inspection Service (NMIS) to conduct an evaluation.

He noted that the growing sheep population in Negros Occidental, now around 9,000 heads, is an opportunity to attract potential markets through introduction of value-added projects like the halal slaughterhouse.

There is currently a huge demand for halal products, with the many Muslim communities in the country, including Metro Manila, Garzon said.

“The establishment of halal slaughterhouse would cost millions and maybe run solely by the provincial government or through a partnership with various organizations,” he added. (PNA)
