Green beauty

Eco products that are good for your skin (and for your health)

These days it is your responsibility to know exactly what you are putting in and on your body. There’s simply no excuse not to be vigilant when you have so many resources at your fingertips (number one being the Internet). Research should be an integral part of your everyday curriculum. When it comes to beauty products you may be shocked at all the crazy harmful ingredients that constitute your favorite cream, facewash, lipstick, and so on.

There are five consistent offenders in the beauty realm, called the Big Five. These are the most common toxins found in your products: Dibutyl Phthalate (an ingredient that’s been linked to cancer and other health concerns, including problems in the endocrine system, increased risk of diabetes in women, reproductive issues and birth defects), Formaldehyde (a known carcinogen), Formaldehyde Resin (a known irritant), Toluene (known to cause dizziness, liver and kidney damage, numbness, and has been linked to birth defects), and Camphor (a poisonous substance that also carries the same harmful effects as Toluene).

Here are five of my favorite non-toxic green beauty products that you can buy right now. Best part is, four out of five of them are proudly Filipino made. Whenever you can, support local businesses to reduce your carbon footprint and promote sustainability and local economy growth.

1. ZOYA

Nail polish is one of the brands that I love because they are Big Five-free and vegan. I’m especially careful with my nail polish because it goes directly onto your nails which is absorbed into your body. Doctors have confirmed that Zoya is safe to use if you’re pregnant, breastfeeding—and it’s even okay for kids to use.

2. HUMAN NATURE

Is a local company that you should get behind. As they state in their mission statement, the brand is pro-Philippines, pro-poor, and pro-environment. Current fave is their all natural, cruelty-free PerfectFlush Cream tint which is a two-in-one product for your cheeks and lips.

3. PURE BEAUTE

This new all natural brand is presently gaining a cult following for their virgin Philippine coconut oil products. I’m a new fan of the Clarifying Facial wash which is an all natural cleanser made/enriched with virgin coconut oil, which cleanses and moisturizes your face without stripping it. Made with five simple ingredients you can pronounce—no parabens, no sls—nothing bad, all good for your skin.

4. ZEN NUTRIENTS

Zen Nutrients uses all natural and organic ingredients in their products. I love using their Gugo strengthening shampoo because it has no toxic nasties. They have a whole hair and skin care range.

5. MESSY BESSY

Messy Bessy is a manufacturer of all-natural home and personal care products. Its goal is to provide education, employment, and rehabilitation for at-risk (formerly abused, trafficked, incarcerated, impoverished) young adults. One of my must haves is the Messy Baby Bug Repellent Cologne. I love multi-functional products. This one keeps you smelling fresh with a blend of essential oils that also helps keep the bugs away.

There is a big misconception that you can’t be glam if you use you greener, cleaner, and kinder products but this is simply untrue. These days eco-conscious trustworthy brands have upped their game and are on par with the best mainstream beauty brands (if not better) without the nasty chemicals and toxins that are so damaging to you.
