The Boy Who Lived Returns

…this time with a family and Ginny Weasley by his side (Warning: few spoilers ahead)

For an ordinary person, a non-magic folk, or popularly called (in the Wizarding world), a “Muggle,” the 31st of July is no more than an ordinary day. But for witches, wizards, and even dark creatures, it was the day that Harry Potter, the “chosen one,” was born, the birthday of the person who defeated the dark wizard Lord Voldemort, and also, the birthday of J.K. Rowling, who sparked the magic in all of us through her Harry Potter series.

Nine years after the seventh book of the series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, was published and five years after the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 2 movie was released, our favorite wizard Harry Potter is back—well, not that he ever left the hearts of the Potterheads who are continuously reliving the stories, reading and watching it over and over again.

The story may (or so we thought) have ended, but the magic continues.

None of the Potterheads knew that a Harry Potter play was brewing and in production until authors J.K. Rowling, Jack Thorne, and John Tiffany announced it in 2013. And finally, three years later, last July 31, Potterheads all over the world rejoiced with their wands and Hogwarts uniforms when Harry Potter and the Cursed Child – Parts One and Two (Special Rehearsal Edition Script) was launched, coinciding with the premiere of the play at the Palace Theater in London.

Here in the Philippines, everybody woke up early and gathered at exactly 7:01 a.m., with Scholastic, Inc., National Book Store, and Pinoy Harry Potter (Hogwarts Philippines) to see the official unveiling of the eighth Harry Potter book at National Book Store, Glorietta 1.

Witches and wizards at heart, from Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, or Slytherin, came in their best robes. Some chose to disguise as Muggles and wore ordinary clothes. All were there to celebrate Harry Potter’s and J.K. Rowling’s comeback and birthday.

The program officially started at 11 a.m. Everybody enjoyed watching and playing The Unluckiest Game. Winners won prizes from Pinoy Harry Potter and Scholastic, Inc. There was even a mini-play where the first scenes of the book were read and acted out on stage. There was also a birthday cake for Harry and J. K Rowling. Everybody wished they were in London at the moment to watch the premiere of the play. But all of them were excited to go home and read the story of Harry Potter, 19 years later. Who is the cursed child?

It’s up for everybody to find out.

The Harry Potter series is mainly about an 11-year-old orphan boy who lives in the Cupboard under the Stairs at 4 Privet Drive in the village of Little Whinging. For 11 years, Harry thought he was just an ordinary boy until he found out he was a wizard. While under the care of his Aunt Petunia and Uncle Vernon, he received his letter from Hogwarts, “one of the finest schools of witchcraft and wizardry,” and from then on he had been on a magical journey.

Harry’s world was suddenly filled with spells, enchantments, charms, Quidditch, owls, and the quest to defeat the person who killed his parents, the dark wizard Lord Voldemort.  After destroying the Sorcerer’s Stone, discovering the Chamber of Secrets, releasing the innocent Prisoner of Azkaban, encountering Voldemort for the first time in the flesh in the Goblet of Fire, learning about the prophecy in the Order of the Phoenix, finding about the Voldemort’s horcruxes in the Half-Blood Prince, and finally defeating Lord Voldemort in the Deathly Hallows, Harry has set off to become an Auror (dark wizard catcher). Fast forward to years later is the Cursed Child book, the eighth story in the series that focuses 19 years after Harry won the battle against Lord Voldemort in the Battle of Hogwarts. It is the first Harry Potter story to officially be presented on stage.HP3

Now, Harry is an employee at Ministry of Magic, a husband to Ginny Weasley, and a father to James Sirius, Albus Severus, and Lily Luna. He remains friends with Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger-Weasley, along with their daughter Rose. While Harry grapples with a past that refuses to stay where it belongs, his youngest son Albus must struggle with the weight of a family legacy he never wanted. As past and present fuse ominously, both father and son learn the uncomfortable truth: Sometimes, darkness comes from unexpected places.
