Gaudían fantasy

In 1900, the powerful industrialist and patron Eusebi Güell commissioned Gaudí to build the urbanization of some estates he had acquired on the side of the Muntanya Pelada to build a garden city imitating those being developed in England. The result was Park Güell, where Gaudí was able to express, as well as his extraordinary gifts as an innovative architect, his role of urban planner in the layout of paths, roads and shared services for the urbanization.

In 1903 Gaudí had already made the porticoes-viaducts, the enclosing wall, the entrance pavilions, the grottoes and the stairway, due to the use of innovation such as modular and prefabricated constructions in situ, which also enabled the production of surface and structure at the same time, being decades ahead in the use of prefabricated structures.

PARK GÜELL AND GAUDÍ. Park Gûell is the reflection of Gaudí's artistic plentitude. In Park Güell stands the Hypostyle hall of Doric order, the only case whereby Gaudí used classical orders, the dragon Python who spits out the water from the overflow of the tank beneath the temple, the tripod from where the sibyls launched their oracles and the source of high iron content water that was sold bottled by the name of Agua Sarva. Christianity is present in the Calvary, the chapel of the Güell house, the Rosary whose beads are balls of stone on the sides of the paths and the crosses in the entrance pavilions. In the middle of the stairway a ceramic mosaic with the four masts of Aragon show the relationship of Christian Catalonia with classical Greek culture, inspired by the Renaixença. /2016.mb.com.ph

This garden city holds some of the best examples of Gaudían fantasy. From the entrance pavilions, with its dreamy firms of fairy telescope, we reach a monumental area by means of a large stairway overlooked by the famous ceramic dragon. Higher up is the colonnade of the hypostyle space (originally designed for the weekly market of the urbanization) with leaning Doric columns, and a ceiling decorated with Suns and moons in a collage made with remains of glazed tiles, crockery and bottles.

Above it is the public square of the park with splendid views across Barcelona, bordered by an undulating bench full of the boldest and most creative trencadís designs (mosaics of broken pieces of ceramic) by the architect and his assistant Josep Maria Jujol.

Further up are the network of porticoes viaducts that Gaudí had covered with limestone extracted from the site itself, without smoothing down, in order to give the whole a natural air. The park us crowned by the area of the Three Crosses, a type of Stations of the Cross in the form of a prehistoric talayot, a small tower.
