DepEd 11 working on 30 students per classroom ratio

Davao City – The Department of Education in Region 11 (DepEd 11) is assessing whether it could implement President Duterte’s desire to have one classroom in each barangay for every 30 students.deped logo (new)

This was disclosed by DepEd 11 spokesperson Jenielito Atillo who said that it was within the power of the regional office to realign funds to meet the growing needs for more classrooms.

“We have to look at the capacity of the area first,” Atillo said in an interview at the Sangguniang Panlungsod. “We have to look into the population and the capacity of the personnel to handle the additional communities.”

Sustainability in terms of classroom infrastructure, according to Atillo, would be based on the assurance of the growth of the school.

“We would be losing investment in schools if the setup is without a clear plan,” he added.

Atillo said that the students will be assured of alternatives, through other facilities like feeder community schools.

The official made the statement as DepEd secretary Leonor Briones said the agency would add 69 schools for indigenous peoples in the region alone.

Atillo said that the 69 schools will most likely be located in Davao del Norte and Compostela Valley.

This was in addition to 100 schools already set up in the region for IP students.

In Davao del Norte alone, the Dep Ed has already added 10 schools with 22 teachers in Kapalong and Talaingod last year.

Atillo added that the schools will adapt the design of the dominant indigenous group of each area, beyond the yellow and green paint scheme of each school building.

This, he said, allowed students to be comfortable within the confines of the school.

The setting up of IP schools was in partnership with the Department of Social Welfare and Development and the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples.
