Netizens react on possible holding of Miss U in PH

Social media users have different opinions on the possible holding of the Miss Universe pageant in the Philippines in 2017.

Many netizens got excited upon hearing the news that Tourism Secretary Wanda Corazon Teo has already met with a Miss Universe Organization official about the holding of the prestigious pageant in the country.

“OMG (Oh my God) Miss Universe 2017 in PH. Make it happen,” said Twitter user @topepe_.

“Miss Universe to be held in PH? Hope it could happen again soon,” wrote @MahusayMagTweet.

Makakatulong yan sa tourism ng Pilipinas (That will boost the country’s tourism),” commented Facebook user Joanne Villones De Silva.

“It’s better to host Miss Universe rather than an Olympic game. Kaunti lang ang gastos. Tourism ang tataas at kikita (It’s better to host Miss Universe rather than an Olympic game. The total expenses in holding a pageant is not so big. Tourism will be boosted),” said Miki Domosmog.

Others, however, are not too keen on the aforementioned plan of the new Department of Tourism (DOT) chief.

Huwag, isang paglaan ng gobyerno sa budget (Don’t, that will need budget from the government),” Facebook user Beams Radiant stated.

“Although ‘di naman ganun kagastos. Nakakahiya pa rin, especially trains (Although it’s not that expensive, it’s still embarrassing, especially with the condition of our trains),” wrote Twitter user @dementia.

Ayusin nyo muna facilities natin like the trains, plus mga CR [comfort rooms] sa destinations. At highways. At yung airport. At traffic (Fix our facilities first; the trains, the comfort rooms on in their destinations, the highways, and the airport),” tweeted @bibil.

On Friday, the Teo announced that she is pushing for the holding of Miss Universe 2017 in the Philippines.

The Tourism secretary said that while she still needs to get the approval of the President first, she already had a meeting with Miss Universe Organization President Paula Shugart and made a proposal to have Miss Universe held in the country.

Teo stressed that having the Miss Universe pageant held in the Philippines would give the country more exposure and could help entice tourists.  To note, she said that should the proposal push through, the Miss Universe events will be held in different Philippine provinces.

N.B.: The Philippines has hosted the Miss Universe pageant twice in the past. The first was in 1974, the year after Margie Moran won the crown. And then again in 1994, with India’s Sushmita Sen winning the title and our very own Charlene Gonzales finishing 3rd runner-up.
