Senior Superintendent Arcadio Ronquillo Jr., Batangas Police Provincial Office (PPO) director, said Ruben Dimaano Tiquis, 60, was driving home in his Jeep Wrangler with his brother, Rodolfo, in the front seat around 9:20 p.m. when they were blocked by a Mahindra 4X4 vehicle in Barangay Kinalaglagan.

A man armed with an M-16 rifle got out of the Mahindra and opened fire at Ruben, who worked as the driver and close-in security man of the wife of beleaguered Mayor Ilagan.

Ilagan is the mayor who surrendered to the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) last January to face charges of rape in Ormoc City in 2013 and illegal possession of firearms last year.

Two hours after the attack on his wife’s driver-bodyguard, police intercepted a white Ford Ranger (AAB-3234) and a black Hyundai Getz car (VDN-180), which yielded two A1 M-16 rifles; an M-4 rifle; two .45-caliber pistols; a 9mm handgun; a .22-cal. pistol, assorted ammunition, scarves, bonnets and gloves.

The 10 occupants of both vehicles – Clarito M. Lota, 53; Hasim A. Abbise, 40; Johnny S. Muallam, 42; Ramir D. Abbilani, 40; and Ramly H. Bariwa, 52, from the Hyundai car; and Sarrie U. Hasim, 59; Eddie F. Dongdon, 40; Rodrigo D. Anyayahan, 53; Mursidi S. Jalaidi, 33, and Manny P. Omar, 43, from the Ford Ranger – were arrested and charged with Tiquis’s murder.
