Poe back to No. 1 in latest survey, pitches for Chiz in LP bailiwick

PILI, Camarines Sur – Presidential aspirant and Senator Grace Poe, who has just regained in the latest TV5-Social Weather Stations (SWS) mobile presidential survey, urged supporters in this vote-rich province to go for Sen. Francis “Chiz” Escudero in May 9, 2016 vice-presidential elections.

Poe made the pitch during her political rally at the Capitol Complex grounds Friday night after campaigning in some parts of Camarines Sur, considered a bailiwick of the Liberal Party (LP).

Escudero, she said, had been supportive of the Poe family ever since her father the late actor Fernando “FPJ” Poe, Jr. ran for president in the May, 2004, elections.

Escudero was one of those who handled FPJ’s campaign. FPJ eventually lost to then incumbent President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.

“It was a tough fight because back then we were going against the current administration,” Poe stressed during her speech.

Poe also pointed out Escudero staunchly defended her father at the height of the “Hello, Garci” controversy.

The controversy stemmed from an alleged audio recording of then President Arroyo asking a Commission on Elections (Comelec) commissioner to ensure her victory in the May, 2004, presidential race.

“There were allegations of massive cheating, do you remember the Hello, Garci scandal? The one who defended FPJ and never left us out is one Bicolano who hails from Sorsogon, Sen. Chiz Escudero,” Poe said.

Local officials say the province is likely to support a Poe-Robredo tandem instead of a Poe-Escudero tandem or Roxas-Robredo partnership. Robredo is running together with administration bet and former Interior secretary Manuel “Mar” Roxas II.

During her speech, Poe described Escudero as a friend “who never left her side” even when times got tough.

Escudero, however, was not at the event. With Poe were former Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri, lawyer Lorna Kapunan, Manila Vice Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso, and overseas Filipino workers (OFW) advocate Susan “Toots” Ople.

Poe defended her running mate’s absence in the rally, saying Escudero also has to campaign hard as the campaign period enters the homestretch.

In the survey conducted last April 13-14, Poe had 34 percent in a statistical tie with Duterte (33 percent), given the survey’s margin of error of +/-4.

The TV5-SWS mobile survey showed Poe regaining ground in the race for presidency following the separate results of Pulse Asia-ABS-CBN and first quarter SWS-BusinessWorld polls released last week, which had Duterte leading the presidential race (33 percent and 27 percent, respectively).

Coming in a statistical tie for third place are former Interior secretary Mar Roxas (16 percent, from 17 percent), and Vice President Jejomar Binay (15 percent, from 17 percent).

The percentage of voters who chose Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago remained at 1 percent, while another 1 percent are still undecided.

In the vice presidential race, Camarines Sur Rep. Leni Robredo (30 percent, from 25 percent) has taken over the lead from Senators Ferdinand Marcos Jr. (27 percent, from 26 percent) and Francis Escudero (25 percent, from 31 percent).

No infighting

Meanwhile, Poe’s camp dispelled rumors there is infighting going on between her and Escudero over campaign expenditures.

Valenzuela City Mayor Rex Gatchalian said there is no truth to the rumors as both lawmakers are committed to remain strong friends despite the allegations hurled against them by their critics.

Gatchalian also denied Poe’s husband Neil Llamanzares is dipping his hands into the alleged problems of the Partido Galing at Puso’s campaign funds.

“I’ve been part of this campaign. Nothing like that is happening,” Gatchalian told reporters at the sidelines of Poe’s meeting with local leaders in the province.

“That’s not true. Those are mere speculations. I know we have critics who want them to fight each other but there’s no infighting happening between the two,” he said.

He said the Poe-Escudero campaign is going on smoothly. (With a report from Charissa M. Luci)
