In Sweet’s shoes

Following Pope Francis’ suggestion to do simple acts of charity this Lent, comedian John ‘Sweet’ Lapus has conceptualized another wonderful project to benefit the less fortunate.

Sweet’s charity projects are always a success. Testament to this is the auction he organized last Feb. 14 at SM Bicutan.

The “Tasya Fantasya” and “Doble Kara” star tapped his good friends in show business like Kris Aquino, Sam Milby, Mylene Dizon, and Julia Montes to donate pre-loved clothes for the event, the proceeds of which he donated to the SM Foundation.

To follow-up on that success, Sweet has partnered with Bandpro Events for his new effort: It’s All About Shoes, which is ongoing at SM Bicutan until March 31.

“I invited my local celebrity friends again to participate in the event. There will be silent auctions for the two-week event. The beneficiary, is, once again, SM Foundation.

“Last time, most participants were celebrities from GMA and ABS-CBN. This time, I also invited my celebrity friends from TV5, so three giant networks will be represented at the event. Among them is Ara Mina, who donated her P64,000 Jimmy Choo shoes. We will be selling it only for P30,000. Note she only wore it twice. I, on the other hand, will be selling my limited edition Jeremy Scott Adidas. I only wore that during the filming of ‘Si Agimat, Si Enteng Kabisote, At Si Ako.’”

Celebrated shoe designer Nere Ku will give a talk at the event.

I knew Sweet was close to Wenn Deramas. When I asked him how he felt about the late director’s sudden passing, he related, “Malas ako sa love life pero suwerte ako sa kaibigan kong ’yun kaya ’yung pagkawala niya is so painful for me. College pa lang ako kilala ko na si direk Wenn through Teatro Tomasino in UST. Doon kami nag-start. He was my friend, mentor, and director. Ang dami naming projects na ginawa together. Noong nag-start siya mag-direk sa ABS-CBN gini-guest niya ako. At ’yung first comedy movie niya na ‘Kung Ika’y Isang Panaginip’ sinama din niya ako sa cast.”

Sweet’s voice started to break and his eyes began to water so I opted to change the topic and asked him about “Echorsis,” his latest movie. “It’s a horror-comedy movie, which will be shown on April 13. It also stars Alex Medina and Kean Cipriano as directed by Lem Lorca,” he shared.

Meanwhile, Sweet’s event isn’t the only one happening at SM Bicutan. The mall has also launched a promo titled Shofie. To join, just post on Instagram a picture of you wearing your fave shoes.

Tag your shoefie and use the hashtag #SMBicutanShofie. It runs until March 31.
