ZAMBOANGA CITY—Independent presidential candidate Senator Grace Poe vowed to provide a bigger budget for Mindanao should she win the May 2016 presidential race to help address the region’s insurgency woes and power crisis.

Poe guaranteed that her administration would allot 30 percent of the national budget for Mindanao to fuel development and assist neglected provinces.
During the Partido Galing at Puso’s campaign here, Poe and her running mate Senator Francis “Chiz” Escudero noticed how the city is still regularly bogged down by power blackouts and brownouts.
“Paano ‘yan masosolusyonan? How do we solve the power crisis? They said that by 2017, all power plants here would be online. But we don’t just need a steady supply of electricity but to also ensure that transmission lines are in good condition),” Poe told local media here.
We need to ensure that our power grids are in shape so it can bear the capacity distribution. Second, is we need to secure our power grids from bomb threats so we will deploy security personnel to these critical areas),” she stressed.
She also said that a bigger slice of the national budget would also help arrest insurgency in Mindanao, which has been marred by hostilities between the government and various groups.
Until we provide a solution to poverty, we cannot achieve long-term peace in the country)” Poe said during a visit to the Universidad de Zamboanga.
Poe said giving Mindanao a bigger budget would pave the way for the construction of the necessary infrastructure to connect interior towns to city centers and facilitate trade of agricultural goods. The senator said this would help fuel development and assist neglected provinces.
She also said this would stop the prevailing practice of recruitment of rebels among the rural poor in Mindanao.
