One last applause for Kuya Germs

It was more than a good show, Master Showman. Thank you!

The Master Showman, an icon in the Philippine entertainment industry, a talent manager, a father, a lolo, a great friend, and a role model to many, German Molina Moreno, popularly known as “Kuya Germs,” spent 82 years of his life and more than 50 years in the industry, not as just as a host but a happy pill to the people surrounding him and to his viewers. All he wanted to do was to make people happy, and that’s exactly what he did in his every hosting session.

“Gusto kong magpaligaya ng tao, ayokong magpalungkot (I want everyone to be happy, I don’t want them sad),” he said in an interview with Asian Journal and One Philippines.

He died 20 minutes past 3 a.m. on a Friday, Jan. 8 due to cardiac arrest. The last public event he hosted before he was hospitalized was GMA’s New Year’s Day Countdown where he was wearing his glittery, sparkly green suit, styled hair, and his warm smile that everybody loved.

His hard work and humble beginnings have always been an inspiration to many. Born on Oct. 4, 1933 in Sta. Cruz, Manila to Jose Moreno and Aurora Molina, he literally worked his way up, starting as a utility worker and curtain opener in the 1950s at the Clover Theater in Manila. 1n 1963, he became a comedian at Sampaguita Pictures as part of the “Sampaguita-Vera-Perez All Stars.” He starred in the film Susan, Susay, Susie, and Dance-O-Rama, both with veteran actress Susan Roces. The last film he made was Paupahan (2008) where he bagged the Star Awards’ Best Supporting Actor, and Walang                   Kawala (2009).

His first stint as a host was in 1978 on “GMA Supershow,” where he introduced the careers of Filipina beauties such us Maricel Laxa, Dawn Zulueta, Sunshine Cruz, Giselle Tongi, and Vina Morales. He was also the host of the shows Superstar and Negosyete and a radio program on DZBB. He continued discovering Filipino stars in That’s Entertainment from 1986 to 1996.

He was the man behind the stardom of Lea Salonga, Judy Ann Santos, Gladys Reyes, Janno Gibbs, Ramon Christopher, Lotlot de Leon, Manilyn Reynes, Billy Crawford, Jake Vargas, Sharon Cuneta, Gretchen Barretto, Ken Chan and perhaps many more. Before he finally bid his goodbye, he was in the long running Saturday late-night variety show Walang Tulugan with the Master Showman where he was never tired of entertaining everybody with his jokes and funny lines. Up to his last episode, he made everybody smile.

Kuya Germs wanted more than just movies and features for the stars in the industry. In 2005, he initiated the Walk of Fame at Eastwood, Quezon City. Patterned from the Hollywood Walk of Fame in United States, the event aims to recognize artists, broadcasters, singers, and others who made significant contributions to the showbiz industry.

“He lived a full life, touched so many hearts through the years, and helped make dreams come true for most of the biggest stars in the Philippine entertainment industry. We are deeply saddened by his passing but we are comforted by the thought that his legacy will live on,” says his nephew John Nite.

He won numerous awards such as the Master Builder award at the 25th Philippine Movie Press Club (PMPC) Star Awards for Televison (2011), an Icon Award from the Gawad Amerika Foundation (2013), and Gawad Dolphy Lifetime Achievement Award at the 5th Golden Screen TV awards (2014).

In one of his interviews, he said “Hangga’t kailangan ako ng showbiz, mananatili ako dito. Hangga’t may naniniwala sa isang Kuya Germs, walang dahilan para magretiro ako sa showbiz. (I won’t retire from showbiz as long as there is somebody who believes in someone like Kuya Germs.”)

Many are saddened, Kuya Germs, by your passing, but the happy memories you left with us will always paint a smile on our faces. Good night Kuya Germs—and may you sleep with a happy and peaceful heart. (With reports from Manila Bulletin Research)
